Rotarians, including Helio Moreira Filho, Assistant Governor of District 4500 - Area 2 from Rotary Club of Largo Da Paz in Brazil came for a quick meet-up and exchanged flags with our Club. Nice meeting you!

Guest speaker Arms Bumanlag, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Erie Shores Healthcare, focused on the importance of authentic engagement in our communities. His goal is to "re-educate the public" about healthcare in Leamington, and to "put a voice and a face to the hospital". He stated that radio and television are still important mediums, but it's important not to discount the value of social media. Arms explained that it was the challenges he and his wife faced with their son, who was born with heart problems, that made him shift his focus and decide he wanted to change careers. "Being thrusted into the world of healthcare with our son, we quickly became advocates for care and compassion – locally and provincially." Apart from his new role at the hospital, Arms and his wife Kerri have also launched a social media collaboration company geared towards local businesses and groups called littleheart social (@littleheartsocial) as well as a local podcast community hub, MediaWorks Studios, which will offer "unique Podcast and Online Video Consultations and workshops" - set to open in November in The City Market.

Gordon Drake spoke about the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) Centennial Scholarship Fund. Founded in 2018 as one of the five Centennial legacy Projects, the goal was to establish an endowment fund to be held and invested by the WECF. Each year, a scholarship of $2000 is provided to a Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) rebounder to further their post-secondary education. It also serves as an inducement for high school students to enter the Youth Exchange program. The winner of this year's scholarship is Malcolm Grant, who has been on two exchanges - one to Zimbabwe as a voluntary teacher's assistant in a school for deaf children, and one to Lithuania where he lived on a farm and learned about the bounty of the earth and a different way of life. Youth Exchange has been an important part of his life, and Malcolm has decided to pursue his studies at Algonquin College to study horticulture.

Message from Suzanne Grouette:

Hi everyone -

On behalf of AG Anne Chetty, I'd like to invite all of our Clubs in Area 10 (and friends of Area 10!) to a Social Meetup evening on Tuesday Oct 1 from 6-8pm at the Windsor Club. This event will give our Rotary Club members a chance to mix and socialize. But we'd also like it to be an opportunity to bring a guest who might be interested in Rotary.

One of the things we all know is that our Rotary Clubs in Area 10 provide a wide variety of meeting times, service areas of focus, and fund-raising activities. Hearing about all that we do is bound to excite and intrigue potential members. So, starting at 6:45pm, each Club President (or representative) will have 5 minutes to highlight their Club and its activities. In addition, Rick Caron, District 6400 Rotary Foundation Committee Chair, will give a 5 minute overview of the purpose and great works of the Foundation.

There will be a charge of $15 per person, to cover light appetizers. There will also be a cash bar available. Clubs are encouraged to bring brochures or information on their upcoming events.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone and their guests! If you have any questions please contact Suzanne Grouette (smgrouette@gmail.com)

In July, three members of the LaSalle club went to Malawi to do a needs assessment and to see if we could partner with clubs there with some projects. They found it was a life changing experience. Matt Maroun is a Rotarian from Dayton, OH who went to Malawi several years ago and now operates a school there. He will be doing a presentation to the LaSalle club (Essex Golf Course) on Tuesday, October 8th at 6:30. I would like to invite members of other clubs to attend to gain some knowledge of these project opportunities in Malawi.

BookFest 2019 is coming up fast! On October 19, 2019 at 8:00 pm at the School of Creative Arts, join the community for a wonderful discussion and opportunity to meet a rising Canadian author. This book is a great choice for your next Book Club!
