The Monday meeting started off with 2 major announcements:
Chandra Kania was presented with his 25-Year Rotary pin. He’s been with our Club for the past 3 years, but has been a Rotarian for 25 years. Congratulations, Chandra!
The Club warmly welcomed Keren Escobar as our newest member. Sponsored by Sheylen Jagajodhy, Keren is working towards her PHD In Social Work.
The focus of the program for the meeting was the Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund. First up was Brian Parent, CEO of Familes First Funeral Home, who spoke about leaving a legacy. He explained how funerals have changed over the years – that no longer are they seen as cookie-cutter ceremonies, but as unique celebrations of life, highlighting each person’s individuality. He ended by encouraging everyone to make things easier for their loved ones by filling out the provided “Life Organizer”, a tool to inform executors about where to find essential documents.
Next, PP Colleen Mitchell gave an overview about Community Service Grants. The program began in 2013/2014 as a result of members of the Club wanting to have more impact in our own community. Since its inception, we’ve distributed $274,850 to local organizations.
Richard Wyma presented the Rotary Legacy Forest. A huge project, this forest will create 70 acres of natural habitat by planting 50,000 trees and a wetland in lands acquired as part of the Cedar Creek Conservation Area. All 11 Area 9 & 10 Rotary Clubs, including the new Global e-club, are on-board to help with this initiative, with the goal of leaving a “lasting legacy of a cleaner and healthier environment for generations to come”. In total, Rotary Clubs are contributing $75k of the $125k project. ERCA was successful at finding grants to cover the remaining $50k.
Don Marsh, Chair of the Foundation Fund, ended the program by reminding us that the Foundation is the “pipeline” for the Club, helping with the funding of all the projects we do. The Foundation Fund brochure was distributed to members and explains various ways to leave a legacy gift - one of the most valuable ways to help Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund continue to help people in our community and around the globe. The threat of thunder storms didn't faze Rotarians... and the good weather came through! Great night at the Fish Fry held on Friday, July 20th at Lakewood Park. A joint fundraiser for both our Club and Rotary club of Essex, the event was extremely successful, with close to 500 people in attendance. Proceeds raised will help provide clean water in Ghana.
Water is Life.
Humans cannot live without water, and yet many must either travel several kms daily to a far-away village to draw water or get it from ditches or ponds, which quite oftentimes carry waterborne disease, such as: cholera, typhoid and dysentery. The solution is to drill wells in villages to provide clean water. Through our Foundation, we have provided wells in more than 30 villages in Ghana, and yet still have many more villages requiring our help. As of 2018, each well with a hand pump costs an average of $6,000 to install. Windsor Rotarian Dr. Bacheyie says that “wells have reduced sickness and disease and have improved life expectancy. They have enabled more children to stay in school, as they no longer have to take time off school to go search for water”.
Take pride in your Club! The Centennial Committee has done an amazing job showcasing Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) throughout the city. Take some time to visit Jackson Park and check out the beautiful flower beds that have been planted in honour of our Club's 100-year anniversary. Also - be sure to drive by the 3 gorgeous billboards we currently have on display, highlighting the Plaza, the Hub and the Museum exhibit (designed by Mark Campbell).
MoldMaking Technology Magazine, a monthly publication with subscribers throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, recently featured the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) Centennial Plaza with an article entitled "CAMM Members Contribute Skills for Windsor Rotary Centennial". Companies from CAMM made in-kind donations of time and machining and polishing skills for the project. Read the whole article here.
Our Club is supporting the Community Meal program of the Salvation Army on Wednesday every week. If you are able to help serve the meal please contact Sue Byron or Sevda Barin. Your support of this initiative is appreciated.

We have a long history of supporting PolioPlus in our Club. Together, Rick and I would like to raise $50,000. That would allow us to vaccinate over 80,000 children and protect them - forever."

Many thanks to Sue Byron, Margurite Reid, Mike Serafimovski and Michael and Walter Willms for working the Bingo on July 26th. They will have raised $1,000 for the Adult Assistance Committee.
Did you know that our Club has been running the Bingo fundraiser since the 1970's? Walter has been heading up the program since 1990, and with 30 2-hour sessions per year, that's a lot of Bingo! Lately, we've been lucky that all our slots have been during the daytime. Walter explained that in the past, some sessions ran late into the night, starting at midnight and running until 2:00am. Bingo is a major fundraiser for our Club, raising upwards of $10,000 each year.

The Battery Recycle Box Program is active. Please drop your used batteries, light bulbs, ink cartridges and other recycle items in the battery box at the back of the room.
