Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)

Guest speaker Dr. C. Lloyd John-Brown explained a bit of the history of ElderCollege, which included an idea from United Church Minister, Rev. Welburn Jones, a curriculum from a friend who ran an ElderCollege at Capilano University, B.C and joint interest from Dr. Gord Drake, Principle of Canterbury College. A feasability study was conducted and in 2011, ElderCollege officially launched. The college caters to those 55+ and offers a wide range of different courses, from chain saw sculptures to courses on how to manage your finances, and everything in between! Visit http://www1.uwindsor.ca/canterbury/eldercollege to learn more about their programs and to register. Also fun to note: they offer gift certificates - a great gift idea for the upcoming holidays.

Janice Forsyth addressed the Club asking those members who would like to put their name forward for consideration to serve on the Rotary Club Of Windsor Foundation Fund Board to do so. This is a three year term starting June 30, 2020. Club members of at least two years as of June 30th, 2020 may self nominate. Nominations must be submitted to Janice in writing or email indicating your expression of interest and reason for applying. If you need more information contact Janice or any director as listed on the Club web site. A Director can stand for re-election but cannot exceed (9) years in total. Prior to the AGM The FF Board will present the name(s) of the Director(s) they are endorsing.

Youth Exchange student Jan gave a brief recap of RYLA 2019 - an incredible program for all the young leaders that had the opportunity to attend this year.

Rotary Satellite Club of Windsor (1918) Evening

This meeting continued discussion regarding the results of the recent brainstorming session. Using the Rotary monthly themes, members suggested possible speakers, service projects and fellowship ideas. A calendar for the year will be developed from these suggestions. Members were encouraged to bring items for the “Socks and Bottoms” initiative and to volunteer to serve at a session for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive.

Our Charitable Bingo format is switching over to eBingo this Spring. The fundraising event brings in around $12,000 to our Foundation, which in turn assists funding mainly the Adult Assistance Committee.
With the advent of eBingos on April 1st, there will be significant changes in the responsibilities of the Bingo Chair and his/her volunteers.

This is our understanding, to be confirmed at a Bingo Charity Association Meeting on Wednesday, December 4th .

* Club volunteers will not handle any money.
* Two or three bona fide members will be scheduled to be in attendance for sessions assigned essentially for PR purposes and for routine clean-up.
* The Club will likely be assigned three two-hour sessions per month rather than one date with three two-hour sessions.
* Arrangements will be possible so that the Bingo Chair need not be present for every assigned date.
* The City will require a monthly Bingo report.

Note: Walter has handled this dutifully for many years. However, a ‘New Bingo Chair’ does not have to make this a lifetime commitment.

Congratulations to Anil and Viju on the birth of their new granddaughter, Aura! Vivek and Ami are the proud parents, and older sister Veda is also excited about the new addition. Happiness always to you and your family, Anil.

Our Club has received 30 pieces of framed art (mostly purchased from exhibitors at Art in the Park, and purchased by Margaret and Ted Herbert over many years). We're looking to sell these quality art pieces to raise funds to drill a well in Ghana, Africa, in the donor's name.

THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF ART AT BARGAIN PRICES !!! – AND FOR A GREAT CAUSE: TO BRING WATER TO A VILLAGE THAT DESPERATELY NEEDS CLEAN WATER.

Any questions can be directed to Ron Arkell, Past President of Rotary Club of Windsor, and Team Leader going back to Ghana in early 2020. Cell 519-973-4052.

Marianne Backham, host mother to many of our inbound Youth Exchange students over the years, has lots of reasons to visit Japan! She was thrilled to join in the celebration of the marriage of Yuhi and Satoru in Kyoto on November 16th. Yuhi was an exchange student back in 2002 and now works at Doshisha University in the International department. Marianne also visited with Takako, our inbound YE student last year, and took part in “The Festival of Old Dolls” ceremony at Takako’s grandparent’s temple in Nishiomiya. Takako’s family were all very welcoming: “I actually got to see behind the scenes of the temple where the family live. It took a long time to get dressed in the kimono - there were 4 or 5 ladies helping all the women get dressed. They told me it takes 10 years to become proficient in doing this!” Takako is busy at school, and said it took her 2-3 weeks to get back into the swing of things. She is in a new class and has made some new friends. Another reason for Marianne’s visit is to see her daughter Allison who was a Youth Exchange student in 1992 and has lived in Japan for 24 years.

Again this year,  District 6400 - Canadian Clubs will come together and have an evening of fun and fellowship as we make a "Donation Mountain". Yes, the tradition of the Rotary Socks and Bottoms project continues.

Socks, underwear, diapers, adult incontinence products, sleeping bags hats, mitts, and scarves will be collected by Rotary Clubs, to be distributed to various agencies to help the homeless and those in need.  This year we have added toilet paper to the items being collected.

Rotarians and their families will be invited to attend the Socks and Bottoms dinner on December 11th at St. Nicholas Macedonian Orthodox Church Community Centre, 5225 Howard Ave., to build a "Donation Mountain". Please save the date.

Please contact our Club's Socks and Bottoms representative, Rebecca Rivard at rrivard@easterseals.org to arrange pick-up.

The Salvation Army needs your help with their Soup Kitchen on Wednesday nights. For more information, please contact Susan Falodun at falodun@uwindsor.ca, call her at 226 347-1565 or sign up online!
