The Year 2002 Easter Seal Walkathon will be held on Saturday May 4th, at the Windsor Raceway
The walkers are asked to arrive at 8:30am for a
9:00am Registration and a 10:00am Official Start.
Last year's event was held on a beautiful sunny day. $65,500.00 was raised for Easter Seals.
The Easter Seal Walkathon is held annually on a Saturday in early May. This is a day of fun, fitness and family entertainment. Participants walk an 8 km route, starting at the Raceway, going up to the Childrens' Rehabilitation Centre and back to the Raceway. Pledges earn walkers a chance to win prizes. Lunch is provided with a minimum pledge of $15. Participants are encouraged to seek pledges from friends and family. Funds raised from pledges for walkers are added to the annual Easter Seal campaign.
Windsor Raceway is the most significant contributor to this event by providing the facilities (location, tent, tables, chairs and most of the food. McDonalds and Tim Hortons get the walkers off to a good start with a light snack and drinks. Many other volunteers assist in the setup and cleanup operations, registration, musical accompaniment etc.
Participants of all ages walk, trot, skate, and bike the route. Two of our Rotarians (Harold Pillon and Al Buchanan) have participated as walkers in the event almost from its first days. The Big 3 auto makers form the backbone of the Walkathon along with help from many other segments of the community. Local celebrity, Wayne Stevens, is a perennial booster.
