Roving Rotarian Report- Victoria, BC by Bill MacArthur
It was a cool, windy October morning as I walked the dark and near deserted streets of Victoria. A bitter Pacific wind blew up Humboldt from the Victoria Harbour. Victorian era buildings towered over me as turned onto Gordon St. What madness had sent me wandering in a strange city this early in the morning? Out of the darkness a voice broke through the morning air, You look like you’re lost. But I was not. I had found the Union Club, the home of the Victoria-Harbourside Rotary Club.
The Victoria-Harbourside Club started its 930th meeting right on the dot of 7:00 am. The meeting went according to the President’s schedule which was mapped out to the minute. There were roughly 90 people in attendance, which made it the largest breakfast club meeting in my experience. The club did a few things during the meeting that are of some interest.
Members gave Happy/Sad Notes which in itself is not unique. Most clubs do them with Loonies or Twoonies but V-H did them with $10- Wow! The club gave flowers to those Rotarians celebrating anniversaries. Fund raising items discussed included a Boat Auction and Roses for Rotary neither of which would be out of place in our area. The speaker’s portion was given over to a new Rotarian for what was essentially a This is Your Life presentation. The speaker, Tom Martin, had been a professional hockey player and relayed a number of incidents including being traded for a bus and being run over by Gordie Howe.
V-H concluded its meeting with the singing of God Save the Queen having started it with O Canada.
