Monday, September 20, 1999 - - Doug West

Author of "It's Your Frog, Warts and All",
spoke on Small Business entrepreneurship. He told us that this was his 32nd Rotary club visit in 1999. He said that his objective was to teach young people about the entrepreneurial experience.
He described our economy as knowledge based and initiative driven and warned that our schools need to educate students on the basis of "future jobs".
Doug outlined his personal experience in writing, selling and promoting his book. He concluded with a description of the Canadian book market.

Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20th, 1999
Children's Festival

This event is now in its 6th year. The 1999 edition was a great success with a crowd of 17,000 generating $110,000.00. Net proceeds will go The children's Rehabilitation Centre.
The Fogolar Furlan Club grounds were covered with inflatable play areas and tents containing activities of special interest to children.

Children's Safety Village

Representatives from the Police and Fire departments and our own Steve Payne and Joe Passa spoke and showed overheads about the planned $2.2 million Village. Members were also shown a model of the village and pictures of committee visits to other cities with existing safety villages. A site for the The Children's Safety Village has been selected adjacent to the Place Concorde in Derwent Park at Forest Glade Drive and the Lauzon Parkway in Forest Glade. The site was approved by City Council on April 13th.
Plans for the project are now available for viewing in the Rotary office.

No Meeting!
Labour Day Holiday

Labour Day today is more of an American holiday than a Canadian one although the Canadian labour movement can justly claim the title of originator of the idea of a Labour Day Holiday. Its motivation, however, is rooted in the turmoil of the early American Labour movement

Labour Day is one of eight annual Canadian holidays when retailers must close their doors and offer no goods or services for sale. It has been celebrated in Canada since 1872. At that time the celebration took place in May.
In 1894, the federal parliament, recognizing that Canadians needed a long weekend at the end of the summer and before the onset of the cold weather, moved Labour Day to the first Monday in September. Canada and the United States are among the few countries to celebrate at that time, according to experts at the Toronto Reference Library.

Monday, August 30, 1999 - Sandra Pupatello spoke and answered questions about her new role as Deputy Leader in Ontario's Shadow Cabinet.

Sandra Pupatello (Windsor-West) is Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty's Deputy Leader with responsibilities to prepare the party for the next campaign.

The opposition parties in parliament serve to keep the government of the day accountable. The role of the opposition is to study and debate legislation and government spending. Within the opposition is what is known as the shadow cabinet. The leaders of opposition parties appoint members to serve as critics for specific ministries and ministers. As critics, the shadow cabinet scrutinizes the activities and policies of the ministries.

Monday, August 23, 1999 - We heard from our Group Study Exchange Team who visited Chili last year

Roberto Sanchez, Grosse Isle Rotarian, served as team leader for a group of 5 non-rotarians who travelled over 1300 miles in Chili whole visiting 24 Rotary Clubs during a month long visit. Roberto, Sue Williams, an administrator from The Windsor Teen Center, and Barbara Porter, a Registered Nurse from Hotel Dieu-Grace showed slides and talked about Chili and its people.

  Monday, August 16, 1999 - This is Your Life

  We were entertained by the life stories of two our club's newer Rotarians.
  
  Jason Lucier described an early life centered on sports where he, or the teams he played on filled the eternal "almost made it" role. At one point, he played in France's American Style professional football league where the fan's were enthusiastic even if they did not understand the game.
  His working life has been with a series of institutions that immediately undergo formal restructuring shortly after he joins them. He said that the major lesson he has learned in life is to "work hard and focus on those things that really matter in life".
  
  Chandra Kania is new to our club but a long time Rotarian with extensive Rotary background. He was born in Bombay and has had the opportunity to travel throughout the world and study and work in many places. In his travels, he has experienced his share of disasters and human intolerance. He said that he was attracted to Rotary as a place where differences between people are not stressed but the similarities among people are the focus. He has been in Canada since 1958 and in Windsor since 1996.

  Monday, August 9, 1999 - Lois Smedick - Windsor Art Gallery

  The Art Gallery of Windsor was born in 1943 in the Willistead Manor. It moved into a renovated brewery warehouse on the riverfront in 1975 and then under the inducement of generous financial arrangements, gave up that location in 1993 to move to temporary quarters in the Devonshire Mall where it continues to maintain its full exhibition program (more than 30 per year). Features presently include 2 floors of gallery space, a children's gallery, a Resource Centre and the Uncommon Market Gift Shop. Admission is free.
  Lois spoke about the public expectations from an art gallery and the past and future of Windsor's Gallery.
  
  A new magnificent modern Art Gallery building will soon be under construction on the site of the previous riverside location at 401 Riverside Drive West.

• Monday, July 26, 1999 - Dr. Saad Jasim

  Dr. Jasim is an environmental consultant and Superintendent, Water Production, Windsor Utilities Commission - he spoke on Water Quality and on Windsor's decision to treat its drinking water with ozone in a preventative strike against the cryptosporidium parasite and zebra mussel infestations.

• Monday, July 19, 1999 - District Governor's Visit

  Michael L. Browne, our District Governor for 1999-2000, is a Windsor Resident and Past President of the Rotary Club of Windsor St. Clair. Mike has been very active in District 6400 affairs serving in many capacities.
  
  Our new Governor gave an inspirational address on the meaning of being a Rotarian. He told members that there was an expectation for personal commitment to show that we rotarians care and that we have a big heart. He asked us to show leadership, be prepared to take risks and to never accept the status quo. He noted that a changing world is demanding a more progressive approach to our charitable efforts - one that will attract dynamic young people into our ranks.
  
  Two new members were introduced - Gerry Pocock and Kevin Bowen.

• Monday, July 12, 1999 -
  Dr. James Laird

  Dr. Laird, a local surgeon, spoke and showed slides about his recent trip to India and the Kingdom of Nepal. He worked as volunteer in a small town hospital. The conditions that Nepal patients must endure would make us all thankful for our health care system. He described the people in Nepal as very friendly and quick to learn. He told the audience that living conditions were generally very primitive but that the country was beautiful. He said that 50% of the population suffers from severe malnutrition, the water supply is contaminated and that almost all cooking is done over open fires with the consequent health hazards.

• The Labatt 24 Hour Relay - July 10 - 11

  

  The 1999 Labatt 24 Hour Relay got off to a running start in Mic Mac Park at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 and finished at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. The weather cooperated, $72,000 was generated and it was a great fund raising party

  Our year 2000 President, Paul Cassano, gave his Inaugural Address

  Paul encouraged Rotarians in the audience to respond to proposed elements in the agenda for his initial Board meeting. He received a spirited input and a variety of viewpoints on the issues he raised:
  1.) Recruitment of new members
  2.) Structure of our Club
