The following brief descriptions of meetings and events are intended as a record for members of club activities. Where appropriate, links to support pages or links to sites related to the topic have been included. It is to be expected that some of these site links will become "dead" as time passes but we have no plans at present to refresh these entries.

Two members of our Rotaract Club
  • Monday, February 6, 2012

    Our Speaker fell ill before our meeting and was unable to appear. In her place, the speakers' committee arranged for a number of individual talks by members and invited guests.


    Two members of our Rotaract Club, President Monica Nowak and her Vice President, reminded everyone that "Battle of the Brains" will take place on Friday, March 9 at the Serbian Centre at 5:30pm.

    They also announced another Rotaract fundraiser, an all-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast, taking place on Sunday, February 12 @ the new Applebee’s at 2187 Huron Church Road from 8:30-11:00am.

    "The Environment, Progress in our region
    for Green Space and Trails, and Partnerships"

    Essex Region Conservation Authority


    ERCA was established in 1973 as one of the last Conservation Authorities in Ontario to work toward restoring some of the region's original character and to manage conservation issues. Located at the tip of Southern Ontario, ERCA has jurisdiction in nine municipalities. These include the City of Windsor, Township of Pelee and the seven municipalities in Essex County that collectively comprise Canada's South Coast.
    On Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, Mr. Richard Wyma became the new General Manager of the Essex Region Conservation Authority. For the past dozen years, Richard has served as the Manager of Parks & Conservation Areas for the Government of Nunavut. He has over 20 years of experience in natural resource management.

    Ms. Behune Plunkett has extensive experience in building business models in both the Private and the Not for Profit sectors. A serial entrepreneur who has owned and operated 6 businesses over the past few decades, including Walkerville Brewing Company, Plunkett’s and PinPoint Strategic Direction, she brings vision and passion to WEtech. Her strengths in team building, business development and mentoring are drawn from many years of active community Board and business involvement. Karen is the past Entrepreneur in Residence at the Odette School of Business, as well as a past Windsor Utilities Commissioner and the 2000 International Athena recipient. She looks forward to playing a pivotal role in establishing benefits for Windsor-Essex from sustainable growth through innovation and technology in both the private sector as well as Education.

    This meeting was celebrated as a Family Matters day.
    All teams were assigned to tables and each table included a Past President.
    Family Matters committee members outlined the aims of their group and asked that team captains call a meeting of their table members to discuss the condition of members on their team who may need attention.

    Effective September 20, 2011 Cathy Masterson, our speaker, became the City of Windsor’s new Manager of Cultural Affairs.

    Cathy comes to Windsor from the City of Hamilton, Cultural Division Management Team. Prior to that posting, she was the Cultural and Historical Services Manager for the Town of Okotoks in Alberta. She has more than 25 years experience in the cultural field, which includes managing special projects, long-range planning and policy development, and administration for municipal services including a community art gallery, visitors centre and performing arts venue.

    Cathy has an Ontario Management Development Certificate in Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph, and she is currently working on her Master’s of Integrated Arts. She is also a member of the Ontario Museum Association.
    She outlined the mandate of her Windsor position stressing the importance of a unified approach to our cultural efforts. She reminded the audience of the many varied cultural attractions in our area and how important they are to attract visitors and enrich the lives of residents.

    The Children's Aid Societies (CAS) of Ontario, Canada, are independent organizations empowered by the Ontario government to perform child protection services. The declared goal is to "promote the best interests, protection and well being of children". [1] Their principal goals are to investigate reports or evidence of abuse or neglect of children under the age of 16 or in the society's care or supervision and, where necessary, take steps to protect the children care for and supervise children who come under their care or supervision counsel and support families for the protection of children or to prevent circumstances requiring the protection of children place children for adoption [2] The societies receive funding from, and are under the supervision of the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services.[3] However, they are regarded as a Non-governmental organization (NGO), which allows the CAS a large degree of autonomy from interference or direction in the day-to-day running of CAS by the Ministry. The Child and Family Services Review Board exists to investigate complaints against CAS and maintains authority to act against the societies.

    New Year transfer of power

    New Year's Day Holiday
    THERE WAS NO MEETING


    According to the Gregorian calendar, used in Canada and many other countries, January 1 is the first day of a new year. This date is commonly known as New Year's Day and is a statutory holiday in all Canadian provinces and territories.
    When New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the next working day is considered a legal holiday.
