  Art in the Park 2011 is now history! And what a great story! With the best weather in years, just shy of 23,000 guests walked the historic grounds of Willistead Park and enjoyed viewing the wares of our vendors.   Chief Smith gave a very informative talk on what it takes to maintain an effective police services unit in today's intensive training, political, research based and communications climate. He said that today's police officer requires sensitivity, leadership and computer training within a psychology background. Gary talked about the importance of making an optimum use of resources through the sharing among other security agencies of physical training and database facilities. The chief equated better training to better police officers referring to the many intangibles required for effective decision making. He talked about training for risk assessment in dangerous situations, community relations and special unit training.

  Labour Day today is more of an American holiday than a Canadian one although the Canadian labour movement can justly claim the title of originator of the idea of a Labour Day Holiday. Its motivation, however, is rooted in the turmoil of the early American Labour movement
  "The observance of Labour Day began over 100 years ago. Conceived by America's labour unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labour unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise."
  "... pressure for legislation to declare a national holiday for Labour Day was exerted in both Canada and the United States. In 1894 the government of Sir John Thompson enacted such legislation on July 23, with the Prime Minister piloting the bill through Parliament against the opposition of some of his Conservative followers."
  
  Labour Day is one of eight annual Canadian holidays when retailers were at one time forced to close their doors and offer no goods or services for sale.
  It has been celebrated in Canada since 1872. At that time the celebration took place in May.
  In 1894, the federal parliament moved Labour Day to the first Monday in September. Canada and the United States are among the few countries to celebrate at that time, according to experts at the Toronto Reference Library.

  The airline, which began flying out of Toronto's Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport in 2006, uses Bombardier Q-400 aircraft, with a seating capacity of 70.
  
  The airline currently serves Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Moncton, Halifax, St. Johns, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Windsor, New York (Newark), Chicago (Midway) and Boston (Logan).
  
  Mr. Curmi listed the advantages that were available through his airline to Windsor travelers - cost savings, travel time cuts and airport convenience. He went on to outline some of the package deals that were also available.

  Canada Oil Sands: Responsible Development
  Speaker: George Bezaire, Director of Corporate Planning,

  George Bezaire has worked in the oil and gas industry in Canada and internationally for more than 35 years. He is currently director of corporate planning for Imperial Oil Limited. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Waterloo and completed Advanced Management Studies at the University of Western Ontario Business School. After joining Imperial Oil in 1973, George was involved in technical and management aspects of the upstream until 1989. Areas covered include exploration, development, production and research for the conventional oil and gas business from coast to coast to coast and the oil sands. In 1991, George was assigned to Imperial Oil's headquarters in Toronto with positions in the treasurers department and corporate planning. In 1993, George moved to Houston with Exxon Exploration Company. He led a commercial group supporting this company's global initiatives in more than 40 countries. In 1998, George was based in Rio de Janeiro as the president of the exploration and production division of Esso Brasileira de Petróleo Limitada. After the merger with Exxon and Mobil, George returned to the United States and resumed his commercial leadership role with ExxonMobil Exploration Company. In 2002, George relocated to Toronto as the director of corporate planning and communications. When Imperial Oil moved its head office, he relocated to Calgary in 2005. George is a registered professional engineer in Alberta. He is the chair of the Board of Governors for the Glenbow Museum and a director of the Canadian Energy Research Institute. George has previous volunteer involvement with the Canadian Ski Patrol System, the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance, Boy Scouts of Canada, sports coaching and parent/teachers organizations.

  George presented a case study on the Canadian oil sands developments as environmentally responsible projects. He said that his company takes its' environmental stewardship in respect to oil sands projects as number one on its' priority list. He went on to say that oil and gas will remain important resources for many years to come with an expected increase in demand due to the earth's steady increase in population and improving discretionary income.

  Extreme heat as a health risk is a growing concern in communities across Canada. Among the principal lessons learned from previous extreme heat events are that prolonged exposures by vulnerable populations are largely avoidable with appropriate preparation measures such as a heat alert and response system (HARS). Health Canada is implementing a multi-year research project which includes developing pilot heat alert and response systems in 4 communities across Canada. Health Canada retained the Canadian Public Health Association to provide overall technical direction for the project. The pilots will help identify sound practices and protocols for the design, implementation and evaluation of a heat alert and response systems at the regional/municipal-scale in Canada.

  The City of Windsor has begun to develop a heat alert and response system (HARS) with the aid and financial support of Health Canada. The effects of air pollution are made worse during extreme heat. Heat and humidity add to the stress on people's bodies, in particular the heart and lung system, especially in those whose heart and lung systems are already compromised by a medical condition.
  HARS will provide residents of Windsor with the following:
  
  A way to identify when a heat wave is likely to happen and if it presents a health risk
  A response plan of activities that will help reduce the negative health impacts of extreme heat
  A public education program to help people make good decisions when there is an extreme heat event

  The Rotary Foundation's Ambassadorial Scholarship is an international education program for ambassadors of goodwill. It was founded in 1947. Since then, nearly 38,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices.
  
  Third-year University of Windsor visual arts student Alex Kais began studies at the University of Hertfordshire last September. Under the terms of his scholarship, he served as a goodwill ambassador and gave presentations about Canadian life to Rotary clubs and other groups.
  Kais has been active with Rotary, heading up a youth affiliate, Rotaract Windsor. He says he is inspired by its mission of "service above self."
  In addition to a full course load and service work with the Rotaract Club, Kais has held down a teaching assistantship in art history while working as the S.T.E.P.S program coordinator in the Education Development Centre, and volunteered for "Students Orienting Students". Off-campus, he's performed in the Windsor Light Musical Theatre.

  Civic Holiday is the most widely used name for a public holiday celebrated in parts of Canada on the first Monday in August. It is not a statutory holiday but is observed as a municipal holiday known as Simcoe Day in Toronto, Mountie Day in North York, Colonel By Day in Ottawa, Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, Founders' Day in Brantford, McLaughlin Day in Oshawa, Alexander Mackenzie Day in Sarnia, James Cockburn Day in Cobourg, Peter Robinson Day in Peterborough, and John Galt Day in Guelph, as well as numerous other names in smaller municipalities.. Although the first Monday in August is not an official Canadian holiday, it is recognized as a holiday in Canada in all provinces except Québec, Newfoundland and the Yukon. Every other province and territory has their own name for it, depending on heritage and the political will at the time the holiday was created.
  Canadian ceremonies and holidays such as Boxing Day and the August Civic Holiday (a "bank holiday") are derived from our British roots.
  This national holiday is similar to Heritage Day. It gives everyone a break from work.

  LEADING EDGE PURIFICATION
  
  Windsor uses one of the leading processes for purifying water: OZONATION. Using OZONE as a purifier is regarded as the best water treatment there is.
  
  What is OZONE?
  Ozone (O3) is a gas composed of three oxygen atoms combined in a ring.
  Ozone gas has a blue colour and a very distinctive odour.
  Ozone is relatively unstable and will rapidly decompose into oxygen.
  
  At Windsor Utilities Commission, ozone is produced by passing a high-voltage current across a purified oxygen stream to form an ozone molecule. This high-voltage energy field (or corona discharge) separates the oxygen molecule (O2) into individual oxygen atoms. These single oxygen atoms are highly reactive and then combine with molecular oxygen to form O3. While ozone has more than one use, it is known to be a powerful disinfectant and can therefore be utilized to oxidize and destroy pathogenic microorganisms in water. Side benefits of ozone usage are that it will improve the taste, odour, and colour of water by destroying those elements that can cause these problems.
  At the water treatment facility, the ozone is injected into the water through diffusers with the ozone gas reacting instantaneously to eliminate pathogenic organisms in the raw water that, if left untreated, could result in disease. After the ozone is finished treating the water, any excess ozone is eliminated by treating it with a chemical called calcium thiosulphate (CaS2O3) and by passing any excess exhaust gas over a catalytic converter.
  The ozonated water then moves into tanks where additional chemicals are added to gather small particulates thereby forming heavier particles. The water containing these heavier particles then moves into a settling tank where the heavy particles settle to the bottom with the resultant clean water being sent to filters that do a final clean up of the water.
  The final step in the treatment process is to add chlorine to the water. This helps to maintain the integrity of the water, even when it is going through old pipes within the distribution system.

  It is non-toxic
  It is versatile: It can treat water with a wide range of temperatures and pH values.
  It is cleaner: It produces odourless, colourless water.
  It is highly effective: It works against the toughest bacteria and viruses, such as cryptosporidium and giardia.

‘Women of the Gulf, When Culture and Progress Collide’
Speaker: Julia Saurazas

Dr. Julia Saurazas has worked in educational management and administration in the U.A.E. and Qatar for over 16 years. During this period, she has been involved in the recruitment of many expatriates, and their orientation to the Gulf. She has also been involved with marketing research and strategic planning consulting initiatives in the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia, and is a judge for the Gulf Marketing Effectiveness Awards. Her education includes B.Comm., MBA and PhD degrees in business and she currently holds the position of Vice-President of Finance & Administration for the College of the North Atlantic-Qatar, in Doha.

James learned a new language during his year and told us how he would explain to his host club in Taiwan what it means to be a Canadian. He said that he is going back home to establish a Tim Hortons outlet.
