"The biggest hurdle isn't really the job losses -- it's the mentality. You have to start believing in yourself again" says U.S. filmmaker Carl Kurlander who visited the Capitol Theatre on February 26th for a free public screening of his movie, My Tale of Two Cities, a personal and quirky take on the comeback of his hometown, Pittsburgh PA..

Windsor Spitfires
Memorial Cup winners
Guest Speaker: President and Head Coach, Bob Boughner
The meeting was casual, so some guests wore Spitfires sweaters or other hockey paraphernalia they owned.
Our Local Junior A Hockey Team has been riding high for many months now with a talent laden lineup playing in a new "state of the art" facility that is routinely jammed with excited fans. We heard about how this has happened and what the management is doing to maintain the momentum.
Our Rotary Club hosted this special event to honour the Spitfires' management and coaches and encourages members to invite guests.
The Spitfire organization has been instrumental in supporting Rotary's charitable efforts by hosting numerous can food drives and most recently the "Toonies for Haiti" fundraiser where we brought in close to $5,500.00 for the purpose of providing Shelter Boxes for Haiti. The canned goods food drives have contributed close to 15,000 pounds of food for Essex County food banks.
Our Governor, Neil McBeth has stepped up to personally cover the cost of four Paul Harris Fellowships to be presented to the three owners of the Spits and a special award in memory of the late Mickey Renaud.
The sum of $730 was raised from an auction of Spitfire’s items held at the conclusion of our meeting. This money was given to the Spitfire Foundation.
Thank-you to everyone who contributed.

International Water Programs
Arvi Kadmin
Avri Kadman, Director of Water and
River Rehabilitation, Jewish National
Fund, spoke about the problems with potable
water in Israel and how they are
handling it.
Not only is there very little fresh
water in Israel but not much is added in the form of
rainfall. Local engineers are desalinating the sea
water and making inroads with that type of production.
It is expected that current methodologies will double production by 2013.
Planners are also planting more trees and making artificial lakes,
along with treating waste water to use in
agriculture. Israel is building reservoirs to
hold this treated waste water.
With this two-fold attack, it is expected the country will produce enough water for its' projected needs by 2020.
Reporter: Neil Bear

Desalination is energy-intensive. Most desalination today uses fossil fuels, and thus contributes to increased levels of greenhouse gases.
Other CO2-free desalination
Small and medium sized nuclear reactors are suitable for driving the desalination process.
Renewable energy sources are able to be used for desalination more readily than for most electricity supply, since the product (potable water) can be stored on any scale, unlike electricity.
One obvious cost cutting strategy is to use power reactors which run at full capacity, but with all the electricity applied to meeting grid load when that is high and part of it to drive pumps for desalination when the grid demand is low.
Much relevant experience comes from nuclear plants in Russia, Eastern Europe and Canada where district heating is a by-product.
The major desalination technology in use and being built today is reverse osmosis (RO) driven by electric pumps which pressurize water and force it through a membrane against its osmotic pressure.
Reverse Osmosis needs up to 6 kWh of electricity per cubic metre of water (depending on its original salt content).
Total world capacity is approaching 40 million m³/day of potable water, in some 15,000 plants. Most of these are in the Middle East and north Africa, using distillation processes. The largest plant produces 454,000 m³/day. Two thirds of the world capacity is processing seawater, and one third uses brackish artesian water.
Some 10% of Israel's water is desalinated, and one large RO plant provides water at 50 cents per cubic metre.

Joe did not dodge any of the educational issues that face administrators today in the Canadian Catholic school system. He seemed forthright in his assessment of the issues. He spoke eloquently about the plans being made to correct past inadequacies while bringing forth the positive aspects of today's approach. He made no attempt to minimize the future problems as enrolment declines and cultural issues bring new demands. He talked about the cooperative efforts between the four school systems and the University of Windsor. The audience was left with the feeling that he is an administrator who understands the issues and is willing to work with his environment in order to bring about the most sensible solutions.

Family Day - No Meeting
Ontario Family Day [third Monday of February]
QUEEN'S PARK, Ontario Canada: - The Government of Ontario created a new statutory holiday in 2008 called Family Day saying
"There is nothing more valuable to families than time together. And yet it seems tougher than ever to find, with so many of us living such busy lives - That's why, on the third Monday of this coming February (2008) - and every February thereafter - Ontarians will celebrate a new statutory holiday - Family Day."
Adding Family Day to the calendar gives Ontario workers and families a total of nine statutory holidays per year, putting the province on par with Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

"Using Internet social networking systems for matching people to available jobs "
Speaker: Todd Hohauser
Harvey Hohauser and Associates
"job seekers aren't afraid to use technology; however, if they don't have such skills, they build them. If you are over 40, and you have not looked for a job in the last 15 years, you'll be amazed at the resources that are now available to you with just a click of the mouse. From conducting Internet research on firms you'd like to work for, to online networking, to learning about resume writing and interviewing there are resources free for the asking if you just look for them. It’s no longer the norm to send a hard copy of your resume with a carefully written cover letter to a prospective employer. You will be expected to navigate a host of posting sites using a variety of formats, and your technology skills will make this task manageable."

Todd brought his Rotary audience a message about how modern social networking systems were being used to perform efficient and wide ranging job searches. He claimed that today over 60% of job seekers find employment through networks. He said that although it is sometimes a difficult process to move people away from their traditional thinking about job searches and into the more effective Internet methodologies, once they have seen the results they are convinced.
