  Kay Douglas decided to dispense with any prepared text for her talk and instead spoke extemporaneously to the audience about her life "as a journey of self development" which finally enabled her to live her "dream career" in advertising and marketing. She said she has a network of friends who have challenged her and serve as a support group and allowed her to live a life that she described as "very rich and full".
  
  Kay operates the Douglas Marketing Group, launched formally in March 2005.
  The company is a full-service agency serving Ontario, Michigan and the international marketplace.
  
  
  
  Windsor's Douglas Marketing Group received a gold medal in the 2009 Aster Awards for excellence in medical marketing and advertising for its "clean and sober" campaign of behalf of St. John Brighton Hospital in Michigan.
  The Aster Awards is a competition recognizing talented health care marketing professionals for excellence in advertising.
  More than 3,000 entries were received from across the U.S. and were judged on creativity, design and layout, typography, production quality and overall effectiveness.
  In receiving her award, agency president Kay Douglas said "We take pride in creating a big picture approach that showcases the importance of the service and delivery of health care to the intended target market."

  President Bill used the Club Assembly portion of the meeting to call upon the occupants of the dinner tables to discuss among themselves possibilities for additional projects that our Club might consider.   Bob gave an inspired talk supported by a professional photoshop presentation. He spoke of the many good works that Rotary International is involved in.
  Bob is a true, committed Rotarian who has travelled and lectured while bringing the Rotary message to large audiences. His lectures are simple, to the point and backed by strong statistics that illustrate success in our worldwide campaigns to fight polio, water born diseases and poverty induced hardships.
  He also praised our Rotary programs which are aimed at educating the youth in matters of service, cultural understanding, peace initiatives and leadership development.

  Labour Day today is more of an American holiday than a Canadian one although the Canadian labour movement can justly claim the title of originator of the idea of a Labour Day Holiday. Its motivation, however, is rooted in the turmoil of the early American Labour movement
  "The observance of Labour Day began over 100 years ago. Conceived by America's labour unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labour unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise."
  "... pressure for legislation to declare a national holiday for Labour Day was exerted in both Canada and the United States. In 1894 the government of Sir John Thompson enacted such legislation on July 23, with the Prime Minister piloting the bill through Parliament against the opposition of some of his Conservative followers."
  
  Labour Day is one of eight annual Canadian holidays when retailers were at one time forced to close their doors and offer no goods or services for sale.
  It has been celebrated in Canada since 1872. At that time the celebration took place in May.
  In 1894, the federal parliament moved Labour Day to the first Monday in September. Canada and the United States are among the few countries to celebrate at that time, according to experts at the Toronto Reference Library.

  Governor Neil's personal goals for "The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands" Support the continued implementation of the District 6400 Strategic Plan. Have Fun through Fellowship - The Family of Rotary is mosr important to the long term health of Rotary. Emphasis will be placed on District Wide Fellowship events that involve the Family of Rotary. Continued efforts on Water and Sanitation, Health and Hunger and Literacy initiatives will be the focus as we continie "Basic Needs Projects" in our communitites and the International Communitites. Major emphasis will be placd on Africa to help in eliminating Poliomyetlits. Support of Membership Development both of new and existing members as well as new clubs. Host a successful DISCON where we will celebrate the Club Project successes. Increase Rotary Foundation giving with 100% participation of all clubs and all club members in EREY.   In June 2009, Sandra was appointed the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, a new ministry that combined three previous ministries: Small Business, International Trade and Investment and Economic Development.

  Sandra,who at one time served as as Windsor (1918)'s Office Administrator, said that plans for a new international border crossing system should include a "spectacular landmark bridge design" which would "make a statement in style and class" and give a unique identity to our area - somthing that would be "recognizable around the world in an instant".
  She talked about the diversification of our local industries and the efforts to internationalize our marketing approach in order to make better use of the research and development skills available in our district tool and plastic design businesses and post secondary institutions.

  The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries.
  For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

  Although the first Monday in August is not an official Canadian holiday, it is recognized as a holiday in Canada in all provinces except Québec, Newfoundland and the Yukon. Every other province and territory has their own name for it, depending on heritage and the political will at the time the holiday was created.
  Canadian ceremonies and holidays such as Boxing Day and the August Civic Holiday (a "bank holiday") are derived from our British roots.
  This national holiday is similar to Heritage Day. It gives everyone a break from work.

  The audience listened to a a reports by Rotarians Shari Cunningham and Matt Dunlop on the successful marketing of Art in the Park 2009
  
  The planning of the 2009 event was challenged by a number of ominous obstacles, foremost of which was a strike by the city's outside workers which threatened to turn this year's production into 'Art in the Meadow'. The Art in the Park Committee met each challenge with innovative problem solving. Record crowds were attracted to this year's event and we know through surveys that our vendors generally were happy with their sales and our patrons plan to return to future shows.
  We will hear about the final financial return to our club and the Willistead Manor project once all of our invoices have been submitted. Our Chair, Shari Cunningham, distributed merit pins to those members who contributed the most effort to this year's show.
