  New John McGivney Centre Model
  
  The John McGivney Children’s Centre provides rehabilitative services to the Windsor and Essex County community, enriching the lives of children and youth with disabilities and special needs by helping them reach their full potential.
  If there is one place that should be barrier-free, it’s the John McGivney Children’s Centre. The building was built to serve only 200, and now serves more than 2,100 each year. The proposed renovation and new 2-storey expansion will maximize the space available for clinical, family services, and assistive devices departments as well as medical clinics, administrative, education and family services programs.

  Periodically, the Club as a group meets to discuss our current situation and talk about the future. Board members are given a chance to hear the feelings of individual members about what we are doing and what they think could be done to improve our effectiveness as Rotarians. At this meeting, members were asked to approve revisions to the Club’s constitution and bylaws.
  
  Our club By-laws appear as appendix B in our Constitution and are based on guidelines published by Rotary International and may be altered through amendments to meet changing conditions, provided such alterations are not out of harmony with the Constitution of the Rotary Club Windsor (1918) and with the RI Constitution, RI By-laws, and the Rotary Code of Policies.

  PP Shari Cunningham gave a report on a very successful Art in the Park weekend and thanked all those who helped bring about that success. She said that our attendance was about 20,000 which is about 5,000 over the previous year.

  Microcredit is the extension of very small loans (micro loans) to those in poverty designed to spur entrepreneurship. These individuals lack collateral, steady employment and a verifiable credit history and therefore cannot meet even the most minimal qualifications to gain access to traditional credit. Microcredit is a part of micro finance, which is the provision of a wider range of financial services to the very poor.

  Victoria Day, The Sovereign's Birthday, and sometimes referred to as Firecracker Day, has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
  In recent years, fireworks displays have migrated from Victoria Day to Canada Day (July 1).
  May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. Canada observes Victoria Day according to a 1952 amendment to the Statutes of Canada which established the celebration of Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25.

  Half a century ago, a report on mental illness in Canada began with these words:
  
  In no other field, except perhaps leprosy, has there been as much confusion, misdirection and discrimination against the patient as in mental illness. Down through the ages they have been estranged by society and cast out to wander in the wilderness. Mental illness, even today, is all too often considered a crime to be punished, a sin to be expiated, a possessing demon to be exorcized, a disgrace to be hushed-up, a personality weakness to be deplored or a welfare problem to be handled as cheaply as possible.
  
  These words were written 50 years ago. In many ways they are still true today.

  9th Annual Dr. Clare R. MacLeod Secondary School Volunteer Awards
  The Youth Services Committee
  

  
  Each year scholarship awards are presented to top volunteers from each of the local high schools. It is amazing to hear about the good works that these students have performed while they carry on with their studies.
  Twenty six young people were awarded scholarships today. The hours volunteered by these young persons were approximately 1000. The areas of community participation included sport, charity, church and mentoring.

  The late Clare Macleod, our resident philosopher, spoke to us many times during his Rotary tenure. Mr. MacLeod joined the Windsor Rotary (1918) Club in 1951. He spent a distinguished career in education.
  He was always insightful and amazingly forward thinking. Here is a summary of one of his talks given on May 31, 1999.
  
  

  "People and Progress"

  Clare spoke about some of the changes that had taken place throughout the 20th century, pondering on whether they represented "real progress". His talk was saluted with a standing ovation.
  He defined true progress in his own unique set of terms:
  

  • it must be related to happiness - a feeling of well being, empowerment and freedom encased in a framework of responsibility and accountability
  • it suggests an improved standard of living that is not just an accumulation of goods and services
  • it requires that value and judgmental changes shape our entrepreneurial spirit to create harmony with nature and the environment
  • it is imperative that we increase our productivity to pay for society's protective institutions
  • it is enhanced by technological improvements affecting both science and medicine
  • there must be adequate opportunity to enjoy leisure time for pursuit of the needs of the philosophical side of humankind
  • there needs to be a recognition of the true worth of individuals that is not just based on hero or celebrity worship
  • we must develop an understanding to accompany our exploding knowledge database
  • society must pay due attention to the values and discipline of the family unit in order to control the social problems that a civilization generates in the decline of these basic values

  Gary Switzer joined the Erie St. Clair LHIN with a wealth of experience as an executive director with various private Telecom agencies. This experience, coupled with a well used passport that has brought him to all corners of the earth on business and pleasure, has given the LHIN a fresh perspective and leadership presence needed for breaking outside our system’s well defined box. Gary has a genuine passion for health care that drives him and his staff to make a difference in the lives of Erie St. Clair residents. His goal in integrating our local healthcare system is enabling "the right care, at the right place and at the right time". This position reflects that through collaboration patients will flow seamlessly through the system receiving timely and appropriate care ensuring that the healthcare system will be sustainable for generations to come.

  The Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network is one of 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) that have been established and launched in Ontario.

  Arnie Charlton, Assistant District Governor for District 6400,
  Nola Milan, a person who has a physical disability and a speech impairment
  and Terry Cloutier, Rotarian with Windsor St. Clair
  

  Nola uses a wheelchair and a voice activated computer.
  She spoke about the barriers she has faced and how Rotarians could learn from her experiences.
  
  
  
  Nola has three university degrees and is currently working as an on-line instructor for St. Clair College. Nola also writes articles for a magazine on accommodations for persons with physical disabilities.
  She used her voice activated computer to give an electrifying talk on her experiences with her disability. Her audience responded with a standing ovation.

  The Rotary Foundation (Our Foundation) is a registered charity that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. Programs the Rotary Foundation supports include Polio Plus - a program designed to eradicate Polio from the world.   The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 in the initial years of their professional life.
  The program provides travel grants for teams of participants to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members study the host country’s institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.
  Team members can come from corporations, small businesses, community organizations, medical and educational facilities, government offices, and nonprofit agencies.

  Team Leader, Dr. Sandor Kiss and four GSE team members, Judit Fodor, Gergely Roman, Lajos Giczi and Melinda Pap from district 1911 in Hungary spoke to us about their country and their own lives. A large contingent from our local Hungarian community were in the audience to meet the visitors and listen to their presentations.

  Joe Siddall, former Major League Catcher
  told us about his 'Baseball Experiences' and the lessons he has learned from them.

  Joe was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario where he continues to reside with his wife Tamara and four children, Brooke, Brett, Mackenzie and Kevin. He grew up playing baseball in South Windsor before moving on to the Windsor Selects program at the Midget level. He played for Windsor Athletic Association at the Senior level before accepting a football scholarship at Central Michigan University. After his freshman season, Joe changed career paths and signed as a free agent catcher with the Montreal Expos. He went on to spend thirteen years in professional baseball playing parts of four seasons in the major leagues. Joe spent time with the Montreal Expos in 1993 and 1995, Florida Marlins in 1996 and Detroit Tigers in 1998. Currently, Joe is attending the University of Windsor part time to finish his degree in Human Kinetics while helping with the Detroit Tigers during batting practice when the team is at home. His biggest joy is coaching his children's baseball teams with the Windsor Expos in the summer

  Joe gave us an uplifting message about the value of sport in developing advantageous lifelong personal characteristics. He reflected on the decision making process that guided him during his ascent though the minor leagues to a place in major league baseball.   Joe will conduct a summer baseball camp this year with The Windsor Stars baseball club. The camp runs July 6-10 from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. each day at Mic Mac Park. All kids (born 1995-2001) are welcome to attend. Instructors include Windsor Selects midget and junior team coaches and players. Find details and registration forms at windsorstarsbaseball.com.

  Our Brazilian Exchange Student, Renan Kilesse, talked to us about his family and his home country with the aid of a PowerPoint presentation.
