  PDG Bob Gallagher spoke on
  the Rotary International Foundation,
  "our Foundation"
  ‘What Rotary Does in the World’
  
  Bob is not only an eloquent and inspirational speaker but also a master of photography and its presentation through Photoshop and PowerPoint.
  
  PP Peter Hrastovec introduced PDG Gallagher. Bob gave an extremely informative presentation on ‘What Rotary Does in the World’. He talked about the projects that The Rotary Foundation works on and explained the mechanics of TRF funding. He reminded us of ‘Every Rotarian Every Year’ and suggested that the TRF Direct system was a very simple way to make automatic contributions to the Foundation.

  We also listened to a report from one of our Exchange Students, Valerie Wortley. Bev Cyr introduced Valerie, a re bounder, who went to Venezuela originally, and then to Taiwan. Valerie shared her experiences with our Club and then entertained us with a beautiful Chinese song.

  This was an information packed meeting dealing with the structure and financial underpinnings of our organization. Many important issues were explained and questions were entertained from members.
  The overwhelming conclusion was that if we are to meet our goals, we must design some new methods of fundraising.

  When we talk about the Rotary Foundation Fund, it comes in two parts
  First, because Rotary is a worldwide organization, there is "our Foundation", the Rotary International Foundation, which provides humanitarian grants to improve the quality of life throughout the world.
  
  Then there is "my Foundation", The Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund
  which was organized to accept, receive, hold, sell, invest gifts, bequests, devises, funds according to Letters Patent which were granted to certain members of the Rotary Club of Windsor on the 8th day of April, 1947.
  The organization of this group is a bit different than the Club's - strictly because we have to follow the by-laws set out and approved many years ago. We have directors and officers - just as all companies do. There are no advisors.

  Herb Gray Distinguished Lecture series

  Canada's auditor general, Sheila Fraser, delivered a free public lecture entitled "Maintaining Trust and Ethics in Federal Government Institutions" on November 24th at 8 p.m. in the University of Windsor Moot Court, Ron W. Ianni Law Building.
  
  It was the fifth in the annual Herb Gray Distinguished Lecture series, which focus on Canada’s place in the world and on those issues which define being Canadian.
  
  Fraser was appointed the Auditor General of Canada in May 2001. Her office is independent of government and provides the reliable and objective information that Parliament needs to fulfills one of its most important roles: holding the federal government accountable for its stewardship of public funds.
  
  The Herb Gray Distinguished Lecture series marks the University of Windsor’s recognition of long-time Windsor West MP Gray’s contributions to the City of Windsor, the Province of Ontario and Canada. It is presented by the University of Windsor, the faculties of Law and Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Political Science.

  The annual luncheon was attended by a mixture of Rotarians and Salvation Army personnel.
  
  The ONG Divisional Seniors Band and
  singer and pianist Dawne Warkentin
  provided musical entertainment.
  
  The Introduction of the Army's 2008 Kettle Campaign was led by Jim Crichton, Army Advisory Board member.
  
  Our principal speaker, Greg Warkentin explained the why and hows of
  "Business, Fair Trade & Human Trafficking".

  The Salvation Army has a number of development projects in Bangladesh. Unique among them is Sally Ann Bangladesh Ltd., a Fair Trade manufacturing and marketing enterprise, which ships merchandise to Sally Ann Ltd. stores in Norway and Sweden, and Fair Trade stores in other countries.

  Rotary (1918) President Romeo spoke about Rotary and our Club’s long and rich history with the Salvation Army. He specifically mentioned how the relationship was forged in 1918 when Rotary first purchased a home on Crawford Avenue which eventually became the nucleus for The Salvation Army Grace Hospital. That relationship has grown over the years and several members of our Club are members of the Salvation Army Advisory Council.

  Morris gave us some insight into the activities of our soldiers in Afghanistan and previous military theatres. He described Canada's role not as peacekeepers but as a soldiering action in which we act as an unbiased military group standing between a group of warlike tribes in an effort to maintain a type of peace. He said that "we do our jobs" wherever we go in the world. He asked us to support our troops regardless of our thoughts on whether Canada belongs in an area.

  The above are telling lines from Rudyard Kipling's poem, Recessional . Kipling composed the poem on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The poem expresses pride in the British Empire, but also an underlying sadness that the Empire might go the way of all previous empires.
  The words "Lest We Forget" form the refrain of "Recessional" (withdrawal). The phrase became popular as a warning about the perils of exaggerated pride and the inevitable decline of imperial power.

  Rotarians Margurite Reid and John McGivney, present Mayor Eddie Francis with a ‘big cheque’ for $1million. This represented 30 years of contributions by our Club for the restoration of Willistead Manor.
  
  Mayor Francis spoke about the many challenges being faced today because of the economic climate, but, he said, what makes him so proud of Rotary is the ‘spirit’ - the ‘Rotary spirit’. He also said that if Rotary hadn't started this project, we wouldn't have Willistead to show to our kids, because it probably wouldn't be there. He went on to say he is proud to be a Rotarian, because ‘Rotary brings hope’.

  Canadian Thanksgiving - no meeting
  
  
  

  
  

  Canadian families celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October with a special dinner for family and friends. Our Canadian Thanksgiving has nothing to do with the Pilgrims landing.
  Thanksgiving provides an opportunity for us to look at pioneer life. It celebrates the importance of Canadian farmers for all Canadians.
  Thanksgiving dinner traditionally consists of a roasted turkey with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
  The History of the Canadian Thanksgiving is thought to have originated as follows: Around 1578 English navigator Martin Frobisher held a ceremony, in what is now called the province of Newfoundland to give thanks for surviving his journey there. Other settlers later arrived and continued these "thankful" ceremonies.
  In 1879, our Parliament declared November 6th as a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Over the years this date has changed. On January 31, 1957, Parliament declared the second Monday in October of each year to be "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed".

  Applications of solar energy can be grouped into three primary categories: heating/cooling, electricity production and chemical processes. The most widely used applications are for water and space heating.
  
  Green Sun Rising Inc. is a Windsor Ontario based company, focusing on supplying solar thermal collectors and renewable energy based heating systems.
  
  The solar collectors capture the sun's rays and directly turn the captured sun energy into heat. A heat transfer medium (water/ glycol mixture) is used to transport the energy from the collector into a solar storage tank. Inside the solar storage tank, the energy is transferred through a built-in heat exchanger to the potable water inside the tank. A pump is used to circulate the heat transfer medium, and a control unit makes sure that the optimum pump speed is used and that the system only runs when solar energy is available.
  Solar cooling: Solar thermal energy can also be used for solar cooling. Using the same high-efficiency collectors and storage tank, and adding a second cooling cycle driven by the energy drawn from the storage tank, solar energy can be used for cooling. More info at www.solid.at.

  Klaus Dohring, a former Rotary scholar, brought us a message on energy sources that contained a warning that humankind needed to change its' ways in how it produces and consumes energy. He said that the earth's population was over consuming energy and polluting with the production byproducts in a fashion that could lead to catastrophic consequences for our environment. He told the audience that every human being had an obligation to become a knowledgeable and conscientious energy consumer. He said that until now we have allowed the simple economics of cheap sources of energy to drive our consumptive patterns but that scientific evidence was mounting that we needed to research and fund the development of alternative sources of energy. He gave examples of how Solar and Wind Energy programs were being successfully introduced in European countries. He concluded his talk by telling us that renewable energy resources must be our new vision.

  A letter was read from the Vice President of Rotary International commending our club on our promotion of the 4-Way Test in a program initiated throughout India's school system. Although the program received financial support and encouragement at both the District 6400 and International levels, its' Originator was our own Om Chandna who was ably assisted by a network of Rotarians in India.
