  Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) and the Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund
  
  The Annual General Meeting of the Club was called to order by President Shari. The minutes of the 2006 AGM were approved. The Financial Statements were not available for the meeting.
  Past President Maureen Lucas announced that, by acclamation, Richard Caron will be the President Nominee for 2008-09 and, after counting the ballots submitted, Don Marsh, Kay Curtis, Gary Katz and Mike Wills will be the new Directors for 2008-09.
  
  Clare Winterbottom expressed his appreciation and pride to be an honourary member of our Club. He said that a hardworking and motivated staff was the reason for Anchor Lamina’s success. He sees the parallel to Rotary’s success.
  
  It was Rotary’s reputation that inspired him to donate 250 copies of his book to benefit the John McGivney Children’s Centre. He announced that in addition to the books he will personally match all funds raised by selling the books.

  Our District Governor, Jennifer Jones paid us a visit.
  
  Kay Curtis introduced the members of the newly formed Interact Club at Assumption High School and gave a brief overview of each student’s accomplishments.
  
  The members were installed and D.G. JenniferJones then declared the Interact Club officially formed.
  
  Kay Curtis then introduced the students, and a teacher, from Walkerville High School as a potential new Interact Club.
  
  
  "The purpose of Interact is to provide opportunity for young people to work together in a world fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding.
  To be eligible for membership a person must possess good character and leadership potential and
  (a) in a school-based club be a student at the secondary-school or pre-university level, or be age 14 to 18;
  (b) in a community-based club be a young person between the ages of 14 and 18."
  
  
  Windsor has a new Interact club based in Assumption High School.

  ‘An Update on the Role of the Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County’
  Speaker: Nigel Couch
  Nigel Couch, Manager of Programs, at the Multicultural Council, filled us in on the role of the MCC in our community. About 3,000 new immigrants to Canada settle in Windsor every year and the MCC, through programs such as language instruction, life skills, help and employment services, help new immigrants adjust to life in a new country. Nigel’s colleague, Rosemary Holt, gave us more details on each program, including its major fundraiser, Carousel of Nations.

  These three Rotarians described the World Community Service projects that they have seen to completion or are presently working on.
  Hasu is holding a beautiful award presented to him at this meeting in recognition of his tireless efforts with the Eye Care Foundation in India and Africa. The award was sent to our Club by an independent supporter of the Foundation.

  PDG Bob Gallagher, with the aid of a power point presentation, showed the audience how their Foundation dollars are used. He told us that for the Polio Program, the number of cases worldwide had been reduced on a yearly basis from 350,000 to about 1000. He said that there were only four areas on earth that needed our attention before our goal of eradicating this scourge would be reached.
  Bob noted a number of other programs that were achieving significant results such as the water well digging projects and many other matching grant projects. He also pointed out the positive results from the work of students graduating from our peace programs.
  Through our donations to the Foundation, RI has so far been able to offer US $244 million in Matching Grants for international projects, send 37,412 Ambassadorial Scholars to study in other countries, and inoculate 2 billion children against the polio virus. Bob closed his talk with an explanation of how the Rotary International Funds are structured illustrating their long range objectives.
  As a final task, bob handed out a number of Paul Harris Fellowship awards to Rotarians and their designated recipients.

  Major Alf Richardson, Ontario Great Lakes Divisional Commander, expressed thanks to our club for once again hosting the Salvation Army Advisory Board’s Annual Luncheon, and to the community for its continuing support of the Army’s programs. Holding it’s first service in London, Ontario in 1882, the Salvation Army is celebrating its 125th year in Canada. Now with 80,000 members, 328 churches and 110 social institutions, the Army is our largest non-governmental direct provider of social services, helping 994,000 people last year in Canada alone. It continues to work toward its dream ‘giving hope today’ for the betterment of the community and the world.
  
  Rotary and the Salvation Army often cooperate as service organizations when the need is great and quick action is imperative.

  The Foundation awards one-year and multi-year scholarships, three- to six-month cultural scholarships for language study, and three- to nine-month vocational study/training scholarships. Natalia Welniak was 1918's Cultural Scholarship Recipient for 2005-6.
  She travelled on a Rotary sponsored trip to Spain where she studied Spanish and Culture at the Universidad de Salamance.

  Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship

  
  March 31 (every year)
  US $12,000 (3Months) or US $15,000 (6 Months) or US $11,500 per year extendable up to two years totaling $23,000
  
  The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.
  
  The Program offers Cultural Scholarship (for intensive language training for either 3 months or 6 months) The Academic-Year Scholarship (one regular academic year usually nine months) to students who wish to study abroad and act as ambassadors for Canada and Rotary. The primary purpose of the scholarships is to further international understanding and friendly relations among the peoples of the world.

  Windsor Regional Hospital is the recipient of a 2007 Ontario Nature Conservation Award. This award is given to a corporation for protecting the natural environment either directly through corporate policies or through a major initiatives), or indirectly through other undertakings that have stimulated significant environmental actions.
  A "green team" was developed which was charged with reducing any adverse effects of the hospital on the local community and the wider environment. They have worked to reduce waste pollution including Green House Gas emissions.
  Windsor Regional Hospital has strived to become a green hospital by improving its recycling rates, reducing mercury use and by hosting Greening Health Care Days.

  Rotary (1918)'s John McGivney
  
  John McGivney (LLD 1985 UWindsor), former chair, University of Windsor Board of Governors, is being honoured for more than half a century of volunteering in the Windsor area and for his dedication to the University of Windsor. As president of the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918), McGivney spearheaded the needs assessment and fundraising efforts for the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre of Essex County, later renamed the John McGivney Children’s Centre. Among other accomplishments, he served on the University of Windsor’s Board of Governors from 1975 to 1984, as President of the Windsor Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Windsor Police Commission, and received the United Way Centraide-Windsor/Essex County Volunteer Spirit City Award for dedication and longstanding commitment to volunteerism in the Windsor-Essex County area.

  Canadian families celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October with a special dinner for family and friends. Our Canadian Thanksgiving has nothing to do with the Pilgrims landing.
  Thanksgiving provides an opportunity for us to look at pioneer life. It celebrates the importance of Canadian farmers for all Canadians.
  Thanksgiving dinner traditionally consists of a roasted turkey with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
  The History of the Canadian Thanksgiving is thought to have originated as follows: Around 1578 English navigator Martin Frobisher held a ceremony, in what is now called the province of Newfoundland to give thanks for surviving his journey there. Other settlers later arrived and continued these "thankful" ceremonies.
  In 1879, our Parliament declared November 6th as a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Over the years this date has changed. On January 31, 1957, Parliament declared the second Monday in October of each year to be "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed".

Christopher Woodrich travelled to Indonesia under Rotary's Youth Exchange Program. He showed us a power point presentation of some of the pictures he took during his trip. It was evident, as he talked, that he enjoyed his trip and had the opportunity to meet many people and to travel widely through the country.

Neil McBeth has been a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Essex. He joined the club in 1985. Neil continues to serve his Rotary Club as Treasurer, RI Foundation Chair, Rotary Club of Essex Foundation Fund Chair and Club Historian. He has been honoured three times as the Essex Rotarian of the Year. He has served District 6400 in several capacities.

Neil prepared a power point presentation on a leadership plan for our club as adapted from the plan developed by Rotary International.
He elaborated on those areas that he thought should be of special interest to the future development of Rotary (1918). He dwelt on those aspects relating to membership development and retention. He also pointed out the importance of leadership training both for club and district activities.

"The Club Leadership Plan is an extension of the District Leadership Plan. It is vital to the stability, growth, and success of Rotary during our second century of service. It provides clubs with an administrative structure to standardize their procedures and guide their activities in pursuit of the Object of Rotary."
