  Chris visited Ottawa as a guest of Rotary under the "Rotary Adventure in Citizenship" program. He prepared a power point presentation of pictures he took during his visit. His talk was humorous as he described the capitol city and our governing system through the eyes of a teenager.
  
  The citizenship program is an exceptional opportunity for the Adventurers to explore our identity, shared values, the implications of the freedoms we all enjoy, and our history of tolerance and the search for compromises to bridge our differences. The obligation to be ethical and fair in all relationships is considered. Also examined are the implications of the fact that most of us are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants to this land.
  
  While the program is focused on governmental processes and institutions at the federal level, it is founded on the premise that the most important attributes of citizenship are determined by Canadians individually and collectively.
  
  Students visited Capital Hill and got to sit in the House of Commons. They also had an opportunity to talk to the actual Speaker of the House of Commons. The trip included a visit to Rideau Hall, the home of the Governor General of Canada. Another highlight was attending a reception where the group got to meet Members of Parliament from all across Canada.
  
  Students with a strong record of academic performance and good interpersonal skills are selected each year for the Trip. To date, over 10,000 students have participated in the program including Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, the Right Honourable Joe Clark and the Honourable Edward Broadbent.

  Windsor has a new Interact club based in Assumption High School.
  
  
  
  The Club was introduced by Rotarian Kay Curtis, who was responsible for its start.
  Club members were introduced individually as Rotarian Zora Sanson listed their credentials and aspirations.
  The club president, Michelle, gave us an outline of what they plan on doing this year and a short inspirational speech about their belief in Rotary's principles. Her talk was met by a standing ovation from the audience.

  After presenting seven Paul Harris Fellowships to Rotarians and their family members, District Governor Jennifer Jones spoke about the upcoming Rotary World Peace Summit to be held in Windsor in April, 2008.
  She asked her audience to participate in the various functions beginning with a preview dinner to be held on September 20th at the Bistro on the Waterfront.
  
  In her formal talk, Jennifer brought us an upbeat message about the gift that Rotary brings to its' members. She spoke about her trip to India and the impact that the poor and hungry people in that country had on her outlook.
  She encouraged Rotarians to be the best that they can be saying that "Everyone has the power for greatness.".

  District Governor Jennifer Jones's Goals

  Support the successful implementation of the District Strategic Plan.
  
  Support Club Membership Development – Attend EVERY New Member Induction.
  
  Have FUN through Fellowship – Create and Support District-Wide Events through the Family of Rotary Committee.
  
  Increase Club Awareness about Water Projects, culminating with a celebration of the Power of WATER at the District Conference in Niagara Falls.
  
  Host a Successful DISCON with over 600 Participants.
  
  Increase Foundation giving with a motivated understanding of Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY).
  
  Encourage continued participation in joint activities and  “area” driven projects.

  Labour Day today is more of an American holiday than a Canadian one although the Canadian labour movement can justly claim the title of originator of the idea of a Labour Day Holiday. Its motivation, however, is rooted in the turmoil of the early American Labour movement
  "The observance of Labor Day began over 100 years ago. Conceived by America's labor unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labor unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise."
  "... pressure for legislation to declare a national holiday for Labour Day was exerted in both Canada and the United States. In 1894 the government of Sir John Thompson enacted such legislation on July 23, with the Prime Minister piloting the bill through Parliament against the opposition of some of his Conservative followers."
  
  Labour Day is one of eight annual Canadian holidays when retailers were at one time forced to close their doors and offer no goods or services for sale.
  It has been celebrated in Canada since 1872. At that time the celebration took place in May.
  In 1894, the federal parliament moved Labour Day to the first Monday in September. Canada and the United States are among the few countries to celebrate at that time, according to experts at the Toronto Reference Library.

  Chemotherapy is a method of treating cancer by using drugs. Often, a combination of chemotherapy drugs is used.
  
  How chemotherapy works
  Cancer cells grow in an uncontrolled way. Chemotherapy drugs slow or even stop the cancer cells from growing, multiplying or spreading to other parts of your body.
  
  Chemotherapy is a powerful treatment affecting the whole body, so healthy cells can also be damaged. This damage to healthy cells causes side effects. The damage is mostly temporary and the healthy cells will repair themselves.

  Guest speaker, Dr. Siyaram Pandey gave a stimulating and educational presentation. His lab at the University of Windsor is researching drugs that select and destroy cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unaffected. One such drug has been found taken from the spider-lily and work is currently being done to make a synthetic version.

  Danielle used a power point presentation to emphasize her message on the importance to Rotary clubs of the development of a Public Relations plan. She said that everyone should have a role in bringing the Rotary message to their community. She recommended the appointment of a single individual who's task it would be to guide the P.R. effort.

  The first Monday in August is a holiday in Canada except in Québec, Newfoundland and the Yukon. Every other province and territory has their own name for it, depending on heritage and the political will at the time the holiday was created.
  Canadian ceremonies and holidays such as Boxing Day and the August Civic Holiday (a "bank holiday") are derived from our British roots.
  This national holiday is similar to Heritage Day. It gives everyone a break from work.

  Physics is the fundamental science. The goal of physics is no less ambitious than to find and understand the laws that govern everything in the Universe starting from the behaviour of the smallest building blocks of matter to the structure of the space-time and the Universe itself. Given all the wonderful variety of phenomena in the Universe and the size of the Universe, it is truly remarkable that human beings could conceive that such a goal is even possible.

  Inaugural Speech and Induction as 2007-08 President
  

  In her remarks, our new President spoke of her calling to get involved in Rotary 18 years ago and the opportunities it has provided for her to serve society.
  President Shari touched on a number of initiatives which Windsor 1918 is involved with, both internationally and locally, specifically involvement in India, the Peace program and the 4-Way Test Essay program. Closer to home, mention was made of the recent donations to Maryvale, the John McGivney Children’s Centre and the Children’s Safety Village. President Shari called on us all to give of ourselves and share our many skills and leadership abilities for the betterment of others, which is in keeping with the theme this year: Rotary Shares!

Canada Day is Canada's national holiday.
It is a federal holiday celebrated on July 1, annually, by all provincial governments and most businesses across Canada.
Canada Day celebrates the creation of the dominion of Canada through the British North America Act on July 1, 1867, uniting three British territories - the Province of Canada (southern Ontario and southern Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick - into a federation

On October 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as "Dominion Day" became "Canada Day".

Since 1985, Canada Day Committees are established in each province and territory to plan, organize and coordinate the Canada Day celebrations locally. Grants are provided by the Department to those committees.
