  • Monday, May 28, 2007
    Dr Ross Paul
President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Windsor
Topic: A commitment to the future

Dr. Paul, President of the University of Windsor, talked about some of the recent achievements of the University and its role in the establishment of three new areas for special development - the Environment, Automotive and Social Justice. He also spoke of the University taking a lead role in the development of a new medical school.

Dr. Ross H. Paul came to the University of Windsor as its fifth President early in 1998 immediately after serving almost seven years as President of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. A bilingual native of Montreal, Dr. Paul is a graduate of Bishop’s University (B.A., Mathematics and Economics, 1964), McGill University (M.A., Educational Administration, 1968) and the University of London, England (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, 1965; Ph.D., 1973).

The recent Greater Heights planning document envisions a University with a steady-state enrolment of about 12,500 full-time undergraduates with a gradually increasing graduate component rising to at least 15% of this or 1875 additional students by the end of the decade (for a total full-time enrolment of around 14,000 by 2009).
The University has also established three pinnacle areas for special development (automotive, the environment, and social justice).
The University took a lead role in the development of the innovative and collaborative Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) programme with a long-term view to encouraging more physicians to locate and remain in the region.

    No meeting…..Victoria Day

Victoria Day, The Sovereign's Birthday, and sometimes referred to as Firecracker Day, has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
In recent years, fireworks displays have migrated from Victoria Day to Canada Day (July 1).
May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. Canada observes Victoria Day according to a 1952 amendment to the Statutes of Canada which established the celebration of Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25.

The late Clare Macleod, our resident philosopher, spoke to us many times during his Rotary tenure. He was always insightful and amazingly forward thinking. Here is an summary of one of his talks given on May 31, 1999.

    "People and Progress"

Clare spoke about some of the changes that had taken place throughout the 20th century, pondering on whether they represented "real progress". His talk was saluted with a standing ovation.
He defined true progress in his own unique set of terms:

    President Elect, Shari Cunningham
  • Monday, May 7, 2007
    Foundation Meeting
    Shari Cunningham

Shari and her "MY FUND" Foundation team outlined to Rotary members how the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) will finance the $1.5 million donation made last week to the John McGivney Children’s Centre and the Maryvale’s Rotary Home of Adolescent and Youth.
The Team members first showed the existing financial position of the "MY FUND" and then presented a 10 year projection of the fund's financial outlook. It was explained that the 1.5 million in donations were to be distributed in equal packages over a seven year period. An historical perspective was given on the development of the fund in support of the projections.

Rotarian Walter Willms called upon all Club members to commit themselves to a Pre-authorized Remittance Plan in support of the "MY Fund" Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund, the Rotary International "OUR FUND" or the Children's Safety Village.

President Maureen announced that a $36,000.00 donation is being made to the Children's Safety Village in order to retire their construction debt.

This week, the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) followed up on its donations last week of $1.5 million dollars by donating another
$36,000 to the Children’s Safety Village.
This gift allows the CSV to pay off the outstanding amount on their original building loan. Once again this was accomplished through the Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund, from which the club obtains funds for projects judged deserving by the club and Rotary Foundation Board.

This gift allows the CSV building to be completely debt-free.
The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)’s
    total contribution to the CSV
    will then be almost $500,000.00.

The CSV was built in 2002 after many years of planning and work by members of The Rotary Club Of Windsor (1918), sister Rotary clubs, and other dedicated members of the community. It is run by the Children’s Safety Village board as an independent entity.

The mission of the Children's Safety Village is to nurture safety and to eliminate preventable injuries and fatalities through education during a child’s formative years in a creative, fun-filled and interactive environment

    Crime Stoppers, Windsor Essex County
  • Monday, April 2, 2007
    Speaker: Larry Dumouchelle
    Crime stoppers Board Member

Crime Stoppers is a partnership of the community, the media and law enforcement designed to combat crime and keep our streets safe. Crime Stoppers programs are operated as not for profit charities and are managed by a volunteer board of directors who take responsibility for fundraising and paying rewards to individuals who anonymously call with information that helps solve crime.

Why Do We Need Crime Stoppers?
Because Crime Stoppers works. It is an extremely effective crime fighting concept that solves crime and keeps our streets safe.
In any investigation police and other law enforcement agencies encounter individuals who will not directly provide information. The three key reasons are:
    1. Fear of reprisal
    2. An attitude of apathy
    3. Reluctance to get involved.

Crime Stoppers breaks through these barriers by giving people the opportunity to provide information without directly speaking to police or having to testify in court.

Rewards are paid for tips that lead to the arrest and indictment of people charged with felony offences and to date Crime Stoppers statistics show a conviction rate of some 95 percent.
Today there are some 1,200 Crime Stoppers programs in 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.
