  George Sampson, Director of International programmes, World Medical Relief (WMR) inc.
  This organization has helped many third world countries including Senegal, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Kenya.
  
  Rita Montgomery Grezlik, a member of Detroit Rotary since 2001, is President and CEO of World Medical Relief, a United Way charity and a Detroit-based non-profit group that distributes medical equipment, supplies, and medicines to the sick and poor throughout the world.
  During her 20 year career in the non-profit arena, Grezlik has held several leadership positions, including Executive Director of St. Francis Family Services (a.k.a. St. Francis Home for Boys).
  
  World Medical Relief (WMR) supplies medicines, equipment, and supplies for international shipments and medical missions to developing nations. WMR also operates a Senior Prescription Program for low-income seniors; a Durable Medical Equipment program; a Medical Supply program, and the "Share a Blanket" program with the American Red Cross.

  BIO: Kristina Verner, WEconnect, is presently seconded as the WEconnect Project Officer for the University of Windsor WEDnet Project, overseeing the day-to-day developments of the City of Windsor and County of Essex's smart community initiative. In addition, she coordinates, the local Urban Community Access Program. She serves as the Telecommunications Research and Development Officer within WEDnet™ , and has completed an in-depth study of the telecommunications infrastructure of the region and created an Information and Communication Technology Toolkit to assist individuals, businesses and organizations in the process of becoming more technologically savvy. Mrs. Verner holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education and is a Certified Novell Administrator.
  
  WEDnet contains information about the municipality and the community.
  Kristina described the purpose of community web portals and explained their value to the people who use them and take advantage of the consulting services offered by the portal web masters. The Windsor Library makes extensive use of the WEDnet as a source of information about their services. Local charities are invited to place announcements about their services and projects. Organizations who lack the ability to build and maintain their own websites can use WEDnet to post information about themselves and their activities.

  Rotarians will be interested in a recently completed website, funded through a government grant, which focuses on the various ethnic groupings that make up our community.

  Included in the site is a section titled Veterans Memories
  Veterans’ Memories honours the war veterans of Windsor & Essex County by providing site visitors with the opportunity to recognize, appreciate and remember their achievements and sacrifices. Unforgettable experiences are illuminated by precious artefacts, amazing photographs and interviews that document the contributions of veterans who served in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

  Michael spoke on Operation Jubilee, the raid on Dieppe, France on the 19th of August, 1942. He then described the effort to put a proper monument in place to commemorate the sacrifice made by brave young Canadians on that day.

  Bucking the predictions by most industry analysts, Windsor West MPP Dwight Duncan brought a message of hope for the recovery of the Big 3 in Canada's auto industry. He pointed to the natural cycles that the auto industry has experienced since its' early days reminding the pessimists of the recovery after similar predictions of doom as the Japanese auto industry grew.

  Our speakers gave the audience a detailed update on the progress of the studies associated with the proposed Detroit River crossing and its' related trappings. The talk was nicely supported by a powerpoint presentation which illustrated the complexity of the undertaking. Both speakers emphasized the consultive nature of all aspects of the studies and encouraged everyone to bring forward any ideas and worries concerning the work of the consultive groups.

  Bradley Radin told his Rotary audience that Templeton Investments operates under the maxim that one should buy stocks and other holdings when "pessimism is at its' maximum" and sell when "optimism is at its' maximum". He admitted that this style of operation "takes a lot of fortitude" but he said "patience" and "focus on the long term" is the key to successful investing. Bradley also advised Canadian investors to expand their horizons to worldwide opportunities in as many asset classes as possible. He said that it is important to keep an eye on the underlying value of businesses rather than their recent stock performance.

  Canadian families celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October with a special dinner for family and friends. Our Canadian Thanksgiving has nothing to do with the Pilgrims landing.
  Thanksgiving provides an opportunity for us to look at pioneer life. It celebrates the importance of Canadian farmers for all Canadians.
  Thanksgiving dinner traditionally consists of a roasted turkey with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
  The History of the Canadian Thanksgiving is thought to have originated as follows: Around 1578 English navigator Martin Frobisher held a ceremony, in what is now called the province of Newfoundland to give thanks for surviving his journey there. Other settlers later arrived and continued these "thankful" ceremonies.
  In 1879, our Parliament declared November 6th as a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Over the years this date has changed. On January 31, 1957, Parliament declared the second Monday in October of each year to be "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed".

We had offered to volunteer, as members of Save the Children Canada to help in the handling of the massive organization involved in an undertaking this big. Instead of workers, we were designated to be delegates, apparently because we could carry the message of the conference back to our community. So here I am to tell you what it was like " based solely on experience, informed by vague dollops of knowledge." as Stephen Lewis wrote.

Read the text of Don's talk. He moved those in the audience with his presentation and was thanked with a standing ovation.
