The satellite medical school in collaboration with the University of Western Ontario’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, through The Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMAN) is ... an initiative and innovative approach to providing new University of Windsor programs that are very important to our community. While much remains to be done working .. with Dr. Raphael Cheung a highly respected local physician and researcher, recently appointed Assistant Dean for our region and Dr. Carol Herbert, Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at Western, and many community leaders, we can look forward to rapid progress over the next few years in attracting and keeping first-rate medical practitioners which this region desperately needs.
See: Dealing with the doctor shortage

Dr. Cheung was very direct and detailed in his analysis of the role of SWOMEN and its' possible evolvement into a full blown stand alone teaching hospital facility. He emphasized the value of the new unit toward the goal of alleviating the Windsor district doctor shortage. He said that the Windsor area could provide a great service to the existing program by creating new medical scholarships. The answer period was enthusiastically used to explore issues pertaining to the local medical situation.

    Fuel Cell Materials
  • Monday, March 7, 2005
    Michael Ritch
    Topic: Renewable Fuels

Michael led us through a detailed powerpoint presentation showing cutting edge alternative fuel projects in various countries. He challenged current thoughts on the wisdom of burning waste materials in light of the CO2 production involved. He spoke about the Kyoto Accord and how this approach met its' standards.

"Abundant, affordable energy has allowed developed society to achieve unprecedented levels of prosperity. However, the world's dependence on non renewable fossil fuels as an oil, gas and coal based economy must soon come to an end in the face of the political and environmental risks it entails.
Technological investment in the development of alternative fuel sources such as fuel cell and hydrogen, increases in automobile engine combustion efficiency and more use of biofuels, will buy us some time. But costly changeovers in energy consumption will not come quickly nor easily. Goals must be set and tough choices must be made."

    Bill Wilkinson
    Trip to Russia

Bill and his sidekick, Lex gave a fast paced visual presentation of Bill's boat trip from Moscow to St Petersburg sailing along the Volga River [Direct distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg: 664km (400 miles)]. The pictures were spectacular.
Bill gave us a history lesson as he recounted his visits to famous architectural and museum sites. In his own laid back style, Bill left us with insightful observations on the Russian people and the changing culture that they live in.

My trip to see Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia This site contains many pictures as these young people record their adventure

The defeat of the Russian Empire in World War I led to the seizure of power by the Communists and the formation of the USSR. The brutal rule of Josef STALIN (1924-53) strengthened Russian dominance of the Soviet Union at a cost of tens of millions of lives. The Soviet economy and society stagnated in the following decades until General Secretary Mikhail GORBACHEV (1985-91) introduced glasnost (openness) perestroika (restructuring) in an attempt to modernize Communism, but his initiatives inadvertently released forces that by December 1991 splintered the USSR into 15 independent republics. Since then, Russia has struggled in its efforts to build a democratic political system and market economy to replace the strict social, political and economic controls of the Communist period. A determined guerrilla conflict still plagues Russia in Chechnya. --From the CIA World Fact Book 2002 Russia - Travelhog

    Israeli-Jordanian-Palestinian
    co-operative health projects

Dr. Noyek is a professor of otolaryngology, public heath sciences and medical imaging at U of T, Director of the Peter A. Silveman Centre for International Health at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and the chief otolaryngologist at Mount Sinai.
He is also chair of Canada International Scientific Exchange Program (CISEPO).

CISEPO's programs promote understanding and solve problems in the public interest. CISEPO has been active on the international scene since 1984. The programs result in improved delivery of health services, the generation of ideas and knowledge, and the institution of dialogue in areas of common interest among national and international partners.

    CISEPO's primary objectives are to:
    Enrich academic medicine, public health and health care in Canada and internationally;
Contribute to Peacebuilding in the Middle East

[Dr. Arnold Noyek] "has served as an energetic advocate and catalyst to alleviate human suffering through a wide range of collaborative relationships and exchanges between Canadians, Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians ... serving as an inspiring example of how people's lives would be enriched if only they would work together instead of fighting each other."
    - The Honourable Bill Graham, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Canada, November 2002.

Dr Noyek spoke to the Rotary audience about the positive aspects of working together and above the political climate in order to improve human conditions in the Mid East. He showed a film in which a crew of young people from different countries were combining efforts to meet common medical needs. He asked Rotarians to view the complete story of his program on the CISEPO web site.

    Bernie Clement
    Vice President Sales and Services
    Daimler Chrysler Canada

Before beginning his talk, Bernie took advantage of his familiarity with many members of the audience to engage in an exchange of barbs from the podium. In his formal talk, he brought forward a very upbeat assessment of the Daimler Chrysler Canada sales picture over the past year using a power point presentation to illustrate his points statistically and show his company's line of products. He clearly outlined the North American current automotive market and the potential there for properly positioned new entries. He said that the industry in North America could expect a difficult time over the next few years so it was vital that Chrysler compete vigorously for its position in that market.

    • Chrysler Group President and CEO Describes Global Auto Industry as Post-Modern Decathlon Speaking to the Automotive News World Congress on Monday, January 17, Chrysler Group President and CEO Dieter Zetsche used an ancient sporting event to draw an analogy to the global auto industry.
"Today, in an industry that reflects the competitive elements of the decathlon, you have to execute in every single phase of the business and come out at or near the top in every discipline to win," Zetsche said. "It almost makes you think with nostalgia about the days when the big dilemma was how to deliver on just quality and cost at the same time. Indeed, any vision for success or growth -- even survival -- in today's global auto industry, is pure hallucination if not supported by execution."

    and
    Fellow Rotarian Bill Howitt
Recollections of Trips to Far Away Places

World Map (Click on the image to see an enlaged version) We opened our New Year with a program featuring two of our Rotarians recalling memories from recent trips to foreign ports.

President Bev recalled memories from her 30 day excursion around the world visiting China, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Kenya, Turkey, Hungary and other ports of call. She experienced security checks in 17 airports staying in 4 or 5 star hotels and sampling a variety of cuisines. She said that the highlight of her vacation was a visit to the famous Taj Mahal in India. She travelled with 142 passengers - mostly retired teachers - using the same plane and crew for the entire journey.

Fellow Rotarian Bill Howitt travelled along the Nile River in Egypt by bus and boat in somewhat less comfortable circumstances as he helped with the Polio Program in that country. Bill gave a very emotional and powerful address telling us about the dedication and sacrifices of the workers in the World Health Organization as they administered vaccine to a people who were sometimes distrustful of their motives. He described the atmosphere of constant fear of terrorist actions as they travelled and the skill of the organizers on overcoming difficult situations. He assured Rotarians that their donations to the Polio Program were being put to good use. He told the audience that the clothing gifts that he and the other workers brought with them were much appreciated by the Egyptian families.
