Welcome to the Year 2004 Third Quarter Meetings Events Page.
The following brief descriptions of meetings events are intended as a record for members of club activities. Where appropriate, links to support pages or links to sites related to the topic have been included. It is to be expected that some of these site links will become "dead" as time passes but we have no plans at present to refresh these entries.

History of Windsor "an insider report"

Rotarian Fred Sorrell characterizes Hal Sullivan as a multifaceted / multitalented individual. He is a broadcaster, writer, local historian, actor and entertaining master of ceremonies. He does wonderful impersonations of well known personalities.
Hal is now the editor, and a contributing writer, for Windsor Life magazine. He spoke about how the magazine got started and talked about some of the early publications.
Hal entertained the large Rotary audience with short skits in which he impersonated Mark Twain and Ed Sullivan. He recalled forgotton episodes of local lore while mercilessly lampooning Windsor's historical media.

The first European settlement in the Detroit-Windsor area occurred in the year 1701 when the Sieur De Lamothe Cadillac and approximately 100 military and civilian personnel arrived to found Fort Pontchartrain on the Detroit side of the river.
European settlement remained largely confined to the Detroit side of the river until 1748 when the Jesuit mission to the Huron Indians was established on the south shore (Windsor) near the foot of the present Huron Church Road and the Ambassador Bridge. From 1748 to 1760, a French agricultural settlement developed along the Windsor side of the river, paralleling a similar settlement on the Detroit side.

Our speakers today talked about what Asthma is. They told us that Sixty per cent of the three million Canadians with asthma have poor control of their disease.. They then explained the purpose of their organization:

to build a community of members who need support in managing their symptoms;
to provide access to testing;
to drive the understanding of what asthma is;
to get medication to those who need it;
to educate about the triggers.
What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes:

Shortness of breath: Tightness in the chest.Coughing.Wheezing

Asthma flare-ups can happen because people don't always take their medications exactly the way their doctor has instructed them to.

There is no cure for asthma, but it is treatable and control can be achieved so that you can live a normal, active life.

Asthma Education Centres are available across Canada for people with the disease and their families to learn more about it.

Rotary in Romania

Rotary was by no means a "new thing " to Romania. Rotary thrived in Romania from 1929 until the outbreak of WW2 when the Government was replaced by a Communist one until 1990. On 29 December 1989, the downfall of ... dictator Nicolae CEAUSESCU ... occurred , and not long thereafter a Paris club member departed for Bucharest as a "scout " to see how French Rotary could assist in the immediate post Ceausescu days.
The re-establishment of Rotary in Romania in the nineties was initially entrusted to French District 1660.
From 1 July 1997 the responsibility for Rotary in Romania was placed under the administration of a special Presidential Administrator of a Rotary extension area under a Swiss PDG named Jorg Tschopp .
There are now 42 Rotary clubs throughout the country

Labour Day Holiday
No Meeting this week

Labour Day today is more of an American holiday than a Canadian one although the Canadian labour movement can justly claim the title of originator of the idea of a Labour Day Holiday. Its motivation, however, is rooted in the turmoil of the early American Labour movement

Labour Day is one of eight annual Canadian holidays when retailers were at one time forced to close their doors and offer no goods or services for sale. It has been celebrated in Canada since 1872. At that time the celebration took place in May.
In 1894, the federal parliament, recognizing that Canadians needed a long weekend at the end of the summer and before the onset of the cold weather, moved Labour Day to the first Monday in September. Canada and the United States are among the few countries to celebrate at that time, according to experts at the Toronto Reference Library.

A meeting and Tour of the Centre

This weeks' meeting was held in the Senior's Centre, 635 McEwan Street.
Our club members were warmly greeted by the Centre's staff. Everyone was impressed with the building and it's facilities. What a bargain at $37 per year for the 966 Windsor seniors who are members.

The Centre's Director, Ellen Hope, spoke to us about the many activities available for members. A beautiful open concept building hosts a computer facility, a lending library with no due dates on the books, a lunch room with $4 meals, pool tables and shuffelboard. Courses, exercise classes, personal care services, field trips, transportation help, entertainment days, cards and best of all a place to meet old friends.

Ellen thanked Rotary for the financial help that they have given over the years - She showed the plaque that was being placed on a wall in appreciation for that help.

The Centre features a wide variety of activities for seniors.

Kids on the Block - is dedicated to teaching children how to keep themselves safe and healthy and to appreciate each other's physical and cultural differences. Using life-sized puppets, this educational program seeks to create a community that helps children realize their full potential.

This is Your Life

Nick traced his life beginning as a 21 year old immigrant who arrived in Canada from Yugoslavia in 1971. He had no knowledge of the English language so he immediately took English as a second language courses. He described his experiences as he learned English and passed through a series of part time and full time jobs and eventually business attempts. As he gained experience and knowledge about the Canadian way of life, his efforts were better rewarded. He eventually found his calling as a real estate salesman and he and his wife have been very successful in this line of work.

Marty offered us a story of his life in the newspaper business from his graduation from Ryerson to his current position as Windsor Star Editor. He told us that he earned his way up the news business ladder through a series of writing jobs. He said that he most enjoyed the investigative part of his work and related stories of several adventures in covering drug busting operations and financial mishandling cases. He talked about the famous people he has met while going about his interviewing work.
Marty briefly touched on the Editorial Policy of the Windsor Star claiming that his background as a Windsor grown boy brought a local based objectivity to the larger issues now shaping our community.

As the only daily in Windsor, The Windsor Star continues as the City's number one opinion leader. Eighty thousand copies are printed for distribution each morning and about 80% of the local population read the paper.
Competing newspapers published in Detroit and Toronto offer Windsor readers a more in-depth world wide view of events and a choice of editorial opinions and editorial topics.

It has been said that newspapers, report on the "everyday lives of ordinary people" and that their principal role is "getting information to the public" serving an Interpretive/Investigative role.
The Windsor Star has historically been recognized as one of the best examples in Canada of a community-minded publication. Because of recent staff cutbacks, there are now more wire pieces in its' pages and there is less local coverage.

In general, the Star's editorial board decides the direction that its' writers will take and how much intensity will be given to issues. But, in an era of diminishing daily newspaper competition and increasing group ownership, there is some caustic speculation among its long time readers about how much influence the new owners have had in setting a less balanced political agenda for the Star.

The Star's letters to the editor section acts as a public forum for opinion, offering readers a chance to respond to editorial opinions and editorial topics and as a forum for debate on topics of public interest. This section has always been well used by readers and serves as a means to balance editorial viewpoints.

The fragmentation of the information gathering and opinion expression market, principally driven by the Television and Internet industries, has changed the way newspapers do business.
The Windsor Star has its' own online publication.
This approach to information publishing is in its' infancy and various techniques are being explored to use its' technological advantages to enhance the profitability and utility of the main hard copy edition. It is certain that the Internet research capabilities allow more in-depth and balanced coverage of issues. It is also certain that the new generation of reporters will need a strong computer search background if they are to survive in the industry.

What is a BLOG?

Weblogs, or "blogs" for short, are online diaries. They first appeared in the mid 90's. In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. They may be produced by individuals or groups.
Many people use a blog just to organize their own thoughts, while others command influential, worldwide audiences of thousands. Professional and amateur journalists use blogs to publish breaking news, while personal journalers reveal inner thoughts.
Modern journalists now use their blogs to provide their newspaper readers with additional pictures and expanded information on their printed articles.

Companies and groups of their employees use blogs to better connect to fellow employees, customers, developers, fans and critics. If done honestly and well researched, controversial issues may be put on the table and thought provoking online discussions entertained. It can even be fun.
Here is an example from a Microsoft group.

The introduction of new software (www.blogger.com) made it easy for the average Internet layman to publish and update postings as often as wanted.
Colby Cosh's column on the Net is an example of the work of a typical blogger.

blogs have reshaped the web, impacted politics, shaken up journalism, and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others.

And we're pretty sure the whole deal is just getting started

Talk about fragmentation of the communications market!
Anyone with a computer and the appropriate skills can now publish an essentially free online magazine (ezine).
The Challenge you have as a weekly or monthly BLOG producer is to find a way to convince your chosen audience to regularly read and respond to your BLOGS.

It's cute, it's clever and it's famous:
A newspaper's duty is to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." Almost a century after he said it, Finley Peter Dunne's quote is still a favorite among journalists - but it's utter nonsense.

A newspaper's job is to afflict and comfort everyone without favour, and most good journalists take glee in doing just that.
Dunne's words betray a bias that should have been eradicated from the news gathering departments of reputable newspapers long ago - those who practice it do the craft a disservice. Why? Because all too often, newspaper editors spend too much time worrying about their publication being viewed as biased. For reasons perhaps due more to history and popular culture than to reality, this perception is growing. ............

Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford as Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, respectively, were brief and shining moments for journalists in the 1976 film, All the President's Men. Today how ever, we're back to being portrayed as a blood-, sex- and scandal-thirsty pack of animals with know-it-all attitudes ready to attack all that is right in the world. .......
A 1999 study published by the American Society of Newspaper Editors found that almost nine in 10 people believed journalists used unethical and even illegal methods. ......

For editors especially, it makes for an uncomfortable relationship with readers. We're never sure exactly what readers want:
do we give them what they tell us they want, or what we think they want, or what we think they need?....
The only thing editors can do is listen and talk to their readers, and resign themselves to the fact that they will never be much liked.

EBT, or Electron Beam Tomography is a technology available for the early detection of America's three leading causes of death: Heart Disease, Lung Cancer and Colon Cancer. It is also used to detect Lung Cancer, Colon Cancer, Gall and Kidney Stones.

A preventive screening tool like EBT is designed to detect disease at an earlier, more treatable stage. It does so in a comfortable and pain free manner.
You stay fully clothed for the scan which takes only a few minutes to complete. There are no shots or needles involved. You simply lie down on your back, hold your breath for a few seconds while your images are being taken, and within minutes, can see your results yourself on screen.

Dr. Kahn presented the audience with a very well constructed visually supported talk. He then answered questions. His responses were succinct and politically correct given his American rooted business. There was an obvious interest in the EBT topic and why this type of scanning had not been introduced into the Canadian medical tool kit.

Civic Holiday - (Simcoe Day)
No Meeting
The first Monday in August is a holiday in Canada except in Québec, Newfoundland and the Yukon. Every other province and territory has their own name for it, depending on heritage and the political will at the time the holiday was created.
Canadian ceremonies and holidays such as Boxing Day and the August Civic Holiday (a "bank holiday") are derived from our British roots.
This national holiday is similar to Heritage Day. It gives everyone a break from work.

DRTP (Detroit River Tunnel Partnership)
The DRTP is a consortium of Canadian Pacific Railway Co. and Borealis Transportation Infrastructure Trust, a subsidiary of the giant Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS) pension fund.
The consortium wants to build a new, single-track rail tunnel beneath the Detroit River and convert an existing twin-tube rail tunnel into a dedicated truck route that would link Highway 401 in Ontario with Interstate 75 in Michigan.

Our former Mayor, Mike Hurst, who is now CEO of the DRTP, told the audience that his group was prepared to sit down with all interested parties in order to determine what is the best way to put the entire corridor in place. When asked if some sections of the route could be put underground in order to answer environmental concerns, he replied that such changes would add to the cost of the project. Other questioners showed concern for the location of the proposed customs yard now planned as a 110 acre site in a city residential area.

The cost of the DRTP project is estimated at $460 million US. Most of it would be financed privately by the partnership.
The partnership owns the existing rail tunnel.
It is claimed that the project could be completed in five years.

Proposed bridge: Fluor Corp. wants to build a new $500-million (U.S.) bridge that would become publicly owned once it is paid off.

To make this event unique for Breast Cancer Survivors, one day is exclusively scheduled for races for Breast Cancer Survivors. Plus, we have introduced the "Draw for the Cure", an opportunity for Breast Cancer Survivor Teams to win money to take back to their local cancer centres. The goal for 2004 is to see the pot exceed $15,000.00 for breast cancer teams. All proceeds from this event will be directed to the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, the digital mammography machine, breast cancer research and awareness, and the "Draw for the Cure".

Incoming President Beverly Cyr's Inaugural Meeting

Bev spoke to members while modeling some of the many hats that a Rotary president must wear during her year in office. She told members to hold on to their hats because they were going to have a great year. She asked 1918 members to take an active role and enjoy all that Rotary has to give them as they provide service to their community.
