The following brief descriptions of meetings events are intended a record for members of club activities. Where appropriate, links to support pages or links to sites related to the topic have been included. It is to be expected that some of these site links will become "dead" time passes but we have no plans at present to refresh these entries.

At this meeting, Windsor 1918 Rotarian Hasu Naik was awarded a pin in recognition of his World Community Service work. Hasu is active with Rotary International in raising money and carrying out service projects throughout India. The value of the projects he is currently involved in exceeds one million dollars. Our Club has donated approximately sixty thousand dollars of this amount.

Children's Safety Village Grand Opening

Our meeting this week was held in the dining room of the Place Concord. A larger than expected audience showed up to watch a program which gave recognition to the groups and individuals who brought the CSV Centre into existence. Former Rotary CSV Committee chairman, Steve Payne, recalled the history of the centre's development.
Current CSV chairman, Rotarian Don Snyder, and Rotarian Fred Sorrell, led the festivities as they recognized the people involved.

The Children's Safety Village complex is situated on a plot of land just south of the Place Concord building.
After the meeting the audience retired to a tent set up adjacent to the entrance of the CSV building where a ceremonial ribbon cutting took place. The crowd then adjourned to the main CSV complex and took a tour of the facilities. CSV children were active in the miniature village, driving vehicles and bikes. Supervisors controlled the traffic.
A large cake was cut up and served to visitors.
Many members of the police services and fire services gathered to watch the children as they circled the streets of the village.

CSV Parade Day

He was Canada's first Jewish cabinet minister, and is one of only six Canadians ever granted the title Right Honourable who was not so entitled by virtue of a position held.
He was first elected to Parliament for the riding of Essex West on June 18, 1962, as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was re-elected in twelve subsequent federal elections, making him the longest continuously-serving Member of Parliament in Canadian history.
Gray retired from Parliament on January 14, 2002, and was appointed Canadian Chair of the International Joint Commission, a bilateral organization which deals with Canada-United States transboundary issues on water and air rights.

International Joint Commission - Mission Statement
The International Joint Commission prevents and resolves disputes between the United States of America and Canada under the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty and pursues the common good of both countries as an independent and objective advisor to the two governments. In particular, the Commission rules upon applications for approval of projects affecting boundary or transboundary waters and may regulate the operation of these projects; it assists the two countries in the protection of the transboundary environment, including the implementation of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the improvement of transboundary air quality; and it alerts the governments to emerging issues along the boundary that may give rise to bilateral disputes.

Mr Gray gave us an inside view of his job as co-chair of the International Joint Commission. He spoke about the expanding mission of the group as issues of pollution become more prominent and the debates on water levels assume greater importance. He told the audience that the exporting of lake waters to foreign ports is now strictly controlled. He noted that although special agreements between the countries may be made without the Commission's stamp of approval, the Commission is empowered to oversee any resulting work.

Location: off Southwood Lakes Boulevard, at North Talbot Road.

The Herb Gray woodlot is a neighbourhood-naturalized park. It was named in honor of the Right Honourable Herb Gray (Windsor West Member of Parliament, 1962-2002) for his outstanding contribution to the City of Windsor. There is a plaque dedicated to Mr. Gray within the park.

Art in the Park Wrap-up

We have completed another Art in the Park event. It was arguably the most successful show in our history grossing in the neighborhood of $265,000.000. About 30,000 paying customers passed through our gates. The weatherman was on our side. The mood of exhibitors and visitors was upbeat. A huge volunteer effort was well orchestrated by a core of dedicated Rotarians backed up by the City Parks Department. Over 500 digital pictures were taken by your webmaster over the two day event. These pictures will be sorted through and added to the web site listings over the next few weeks.

Maureen and Chuck recognized the principal contributors to this year's outstanding Art in the Park organizational effort.

Art in the Manor
A Saturday evening event in the Willistead Manor was set to a 20's theme. Those who attended were universally impressed by the quality of the party in terms of its' entertainment, ambience and fun factor. Members of the cast of the local "Chicago" production, dressed in appropriate 20's garb, mingled with guests. The singers, actors and dancers greeted guests as they arrived and then presented skits from their show during the evening.
Individual rooms throughout the mansion featured other entertainers including a jazz piano player, a female vocalist, a live statue, a classical chamber music group, a dance band and barbershop quartet. Two of our Art in the Park exhibitors painted throughout the evening, demonstrating their techniques to guests.
Various finger foods were carried throughout the rooms. A full course meal was available to those who wanted to fill their plates. A nice warm evening made the garden patio a favourite destination for mingling and imbibing.
As the evening waned, the second floor of the mansion attracted more of the guests for dancing, coffee and deserts.

The Art in the Park committee has postponed its' meeting at Plunketts. The meeting is designed to review this year's experiences and begin the planning for next year.

Neil presented us with a succinct summary of the University of Windsor's value as a community resource. He brought us up to date on the programs, student numbers, research capacity and plans for the immediate future. His enthusiasm for the institution shone through his presentation.

At this meeting, our club announced to the Rotary (1918) membership it's choice for the
Eli Goldin Lifetime Achievement Award
Eli was a long time Rotary (1918) member and former president of our club who involved himself with many of our charitable efforts.

This prestigious award honours the memory of a great humanitarian, Eli Goldin, and recognizes the community work of an outstanding individual through a lifetime of giving.

This year's winner is our "First Lady of Rotary", Evelyn Slobasky. Evelyn was a Rotarian at heart for many years before she was formally invited to join our club, working hand in hand with her husband, Rotarian Harry Slobasky, on many projects. After her husband's passing, Evelyn threw her heart and energy into Rotary and the community and continues to do so even as an octogenarian.

This prestigious award honours the memory of a great humanitarian, Eli Goldin, and recognizes the community work of an outstanding individual through a lifetime of giving.
A formal announcement will be made to the full club membership at our next Monday meeting on May 31st.

of the Canadian Navy

The Commodore talked about the necessity of a strong Canadian Navy for homeland security and in support of world trade. He said that by 2011, there will be 3 new group support ships. He explained why a submarine expertise was important for surveillance and offensive operations in today's world.

The Youth Committee presented its' annual Volunteer Awards Program.

Community oriented young people from our local high schools were recognized.

Our motivational speaker was Tania Sorge, who along with Doris Lapico, co-founded
Transition to Betterness
an organization dedicated to raising funds for
the special and unique needs of cancer patients and their families within our community.

Tania brought a message about the power of volunteerism driven by motivation. She encouraged the students in our audience to exploit their community service potential by telling them about the creative fundraising her group does in support of our local Cancer Centre.

Topic: "Marketing the Urban Forest"

Jeff presented a compelling argument for the planting and maintenance of trees in urban areas. A large audience watched his overhead screen production as he used Rotary's 4 way test to illustrate his case.

Trees add value to our communities. Urban forests provide a broad array of well-known environmental, economic, and social benefits to ... Canadians. For example:

Sequestering of gaseous air pollutants and particulates.
Energy conservation through transpirational cooling, shade, and wind reduction Storm-water attenuation.
Noise buffering
Provision of wildlife habitat
Increased property value
Improved aesthetics, and
Psychological well being

Urban Forests need careful management because they are constantly under attack by thoughtless humans, drought conditions and a variety of pests and diseases .

Ash Trees Decline The Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis), a lethal insect to ash (Fraxinus sp.), was discovered in Michigan in May, 2002, but was probably introduced into the state at least five years previously from Asia, its native origin. It was confirmed in Windsor in August, 2002.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is asking residents of the Greater Windsor area not to remove materials such as dead or damaged trees, firewood, and ash nursery stock from the area as this may cause the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle into areas that are not infested. This pest is killing ash trees in the area. CFIA will begin showing sites to professional tree removal companies in preparation of creating the Ash-Free Zone and slowing the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer into Chatham-Kent. The Emerald Ash Borer kills ash trees and is now established in Essex County.

Topic: "Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disruptors Presence in Water Supply, and the Effect of Ozone on their Removal "

The endocrine system is a set of glands and the hormones they produce, which help guide the development, growth, reproduction, and behaviour of animals and humans. a complex system consisting of glands in the body that produce hormones. Examples are the thyroid gland in the throat, the pituitary gland in the brain, the adrenals, pancreas and ovaries in the abdomen, and the testicles, which lie outside the abdomen.
Some chemicals, both natural and man-made, can interfere with endocrine glands and their hormones or where the hormones act. These chemicals are called ‘endocrine disruptors’ or ‘endocrine disrupting chemicals’ (EDCs). Endocrine disruption is considered to be a change that may lead to harmful effects.

President of Parents for Children's Mental Health Ontario
Topic: Children's Mental Health

This meeting was held at Maryvale

Susan Hess - parent advocate and president of Parents for Children's Mental Health - has been touring the province with The Quilt of Honour. This quilt honours children with mental illness and the stigma, shame, misperception, and misunderstandings that shroud this disease. Four of the children whose names appear on the quilt committed suicide as a result of their struggle with mental illness.

Subject: Border Stars Professional Soccer
Speaker: President, Jeff Hodgson

Windsor Stadium will be the site for a new professional soccer team called the Border Stars. The Windsor season opener is scheduled for Saturday June 5th at Windsor Stadium.

Jeff announced that the Canadian Professional Soccer League has arrived. He talked about the efforts being made to let people know about the Professional league and about all the local soccer organizations who are providing the environment for the development of local talent.

Review of our Club Activities

This meeting was changed at the last moment when our speaker was unavoidably detoured as the result of a business matter.
The president called together his cabinet and they hastily put together a very entertaining program featuring a review of our current activities and upcoming Rotary events. Sometimes pressure situations bring out the best in our leaders - this was one of those occasions.
