  This week we heard from long time member, Jim Moore

  Jim Moore fills the club catagory, "Technology, Consulting".
  He and his wife, Rotarian Dianne Moore, are joint owners of Moore Global Corporation. Jim has been a Rotarian for 35 years and he comes from a family that has always been involved in Rotary. His Grandfather was a Rotarian in the Merlin Ontario club where Jim served as a Rotary volunteer in his teenage years. He and his wife have sponsored all five of their grandchildren as Paul Harris Fellows. His daughter served for a year as a volunteer with Mother Theresa in India. Jim has travelled throughout the world. Next week he plans to meet Rotarian, Dr. Godfrey Bacheyie in Ghana where they will review Rotary projects in that country.

  Amanda Gellman is the University of Windsor's new
  Vice-President, University Advancement,
  Special Assistant to the President
  University of Windsor
  Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund

  A native of Newfoundland, Ms. Gellman came to the University of Windsor in October 2001 as Executive Assistant to the President/Liaison to External Affairs.

  The OSOTF is designed to assist individuals who are academically qualified but would otherwise be unable to attend university due to financial restraints. The province will match privately raised donations dollar for dollar, the money collected will be invested, and income earned from the investments will provide financial assistance to students. Business, individuals, and community organizations wishing to contribute to the fund can do so through the development offices of the college or university of their choice
  
  Amanda said that the University of Windsor is eligible for up to $6.3M in matching grants over this campaign period. She encouraged potential donors to take this opportunity to pledge over the next five years in order to take advantage of this doubling effect.

  A perspective on the Prospects of Organized Labour in Windsor

  Gary took us through a historical journey of the labour movement in our area dating from the original labour Council of shoemakers, tailors and bricklayers in 1865. He recounted the battles fought over the clothing sweat shops through the decision to organize unskilled workers. He recalled the rise and decline of union power through the years and the development of a community orientation and political thrust in consideration of legislation and trade agreements.

  In the broadest sense, the mandate of a Consulate General is to exemplify, promote, and protect Canadian interests and serve Canadians at home and abroad. This includes promoting Canadian exports, industrial development and tourism; providing consular, passport, visa and immigration services; monitoring political, economic, social and technological developments; and heightening an awareness of Canadian affairs and culture, through constant interaction with the private sector and with local, state and federal authorities.
  
  Mr. Delvecchio presented a detailed look at the purpose of his office and then illustrated his work with a listing of the current issues on his plate. The scope of his responsibility is truly broad and most important to Canada's economic position in trade.

  Our Exchange Student Thomas Jensen came to Canada from Denmark and tried out for his host area high school football team. He had never played the game before and had no knowledge of football rules but he made the team. His team managed to win the local title and then go on to play in the Toronto Skydome where they won the provincial championship. No wonder he's cheering!

  Today's program featured an illustrated talk by German Exchange Student Lisa Paller. She showed pictures of her village, home and boarding school while describing the typical lifestyle of the villagers.

  Minister for International Cooperation
  CIDA's activities to advance women's rights in lesser developed countries

  Susan spoke about her experiences and observations as she travelled throughout the third world. She quoted statistics that underlined the pitiful state of the populations in these countries, asking that we as Canadians do our part to contribute to international humanitarian causes. She emphasized the impact that education could have on issues of women's rights, gender equality and health.

  Glenn presented his audience with a detailed look at what it means to be in policing in today's technological world. He told us that we all must change the way in which we deal with issues of race, culture and the training of our police force. He talked about the difficulties arising from rapid legislative changes and administrative practices in the criminal justice field.
  The Chief distributed a document entitled "A guide to Police Practices" that was recently prepared by the Windsor Police Service aimed at the community. The guide informs about police procedures, suggested conduct when interacting with the police and community resources and services.

  This program was the latest in a long running and popular series designed to enable Rotarians to come to better know their club members. This edition featured a change of strategy, focusing on a talk by 30 year veteran Bill Howitt.
  Bill first talked about his family and the impact they have had on him. He then gave a pep talk to our club by recalling the many great projects we have been involved in over the years.

  Rotarian Ellen Hope led the club through an exercise in which members at each table were asked to write down the thing that attracted them most to Rotary. A team captain at each table was then asked to present these jottings to club members. It was perhaps not surprising that there were many repeats from table to table.
  Fellowship with a diversity of individuals from different cultures in a positive climate, the opportunity to perform voluntary service local and international, youth programs, and the privlege of rotary membership were most often mentioned.

  CCI The Renaissance School was founded in 1995 by a Canadian teacher with the purpose of giving students the opportunity to study in English within their own curriculum while living in Italy. The aim of the School is to provide excellent education and offer small class sizes, state-of-the-art facilities, a rich extracurricular program, and a strong mentorship program.

  Canadian Thanksgiving - no meeting
  

  
  

  Canadian families celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October with a special dinner for family and friends. Our Canadian Thanksgiving has nothing to do with the Pilgrims landing.
  Thanksgiving provides an opportunity for us to look at pioneer life. It celebrates the importance of Canadian farmers for all Canadians.
  Thanksgiving dinner traditionally consists of a roasted turkey with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
  The History of the Canadian Thanksgiving is thought to have originated as follows: Around 1578 English navigator Martin Frobisher held a ceremony, in what is now called the province of Newfoundland to give thanks for surviving his journey there. Other settlers later arrived and continued these "thankful" ceremonies.
  In 1879, our Parliament declared November 6th as a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Over the years this date has changed. On January 31, 1957, Parliament declared the second Monday in October of each year to be "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed".

  There was an official unveiling and dedication of a
  Rotary International Peace Monument
  in Charles Clark Square at 11:00 AM

  A young 13 year old Benson public school student, who is a recent immigrant from Sarajevo in the former Jugoslavian Republic, spoke to us about her feelings now that she lives in Canada. She talked about her life during the conflict she lived through and told us that "Every single citizen should be glad that they live in Canada".
  Roseland Rotarian Anna Jurak conceived the idea of a peace monument during a visit to Siberia in 1999.
  Lisa Pickering, a graduate in Civil Engineering at St. Clair College, designed the monument.
