Welcome to the Year 2003 Third Quarter Meetings and Events Page.
The following brief descriptions of meetings and events are intended as a record for members of club activities. Where appropriate, links to support pages or links to sites related to the topic have been included. It is to be expected that some of these site links will become "dead" as time passes but we have no plans at present to refresh these entries.

About the Ford Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing
The Ford Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing (FCEM) will be a signature building for St.Clair College and the community. Inspired by the industry models and consultation, this first class academic resource will prepare students to move with a seamless transition from the classroom to the manufacturing environment. Opening in September 2003, the FCEM is a $32 million project that provides more than 100,000 square feet of space with over 80% devoted to learning and teaching. The FCEM will feature four new precision metal cutting labs, CNC labs that cover more than 7,000 square feet of space, industrial controls facilities, five CAD/CAM centres a metallurgy lab, plastics lab and an applied research area. It will be furnished with leading-edge, hands-on equipment providing enhanced learning opportunities for students, workers, and employers.

Mr. Dan White spoke about a 1,000,000 person skills shortage in Canada in the metals machining and plastic molding sector. He explained to the audience about where the grant money was coming from to support the building and outfitting of the St. Clair Manufacturing Centre. Mr. White presented statistical evidence to show the historic and continuing importance of the manufacturing support sector to Windsor's basic economic health. He concluded by saying that there are now joint degree programs in place with the University of Windsor Engineering faculty. Rotarians were impressed with both the size of the new building and its' equipment complement.

Gregg Ward, Vice President

Gregg presented a very simple, straight forward case for the need of a Detroit/Windsor Ferry Service as a means to transport overweight or hazzardous loads.
He not only outlined how the present barge service operates but he also suggested that its' use could be expanded to relieve some of the pressure on the traditional Bridge operation.

Windsor Regional Cancer Centre
Prostate Cancer

Dr. Springer presented a very thorough analysis of what a prostate cancer victim can expect when undergoing treatment under today's state of the art in cancer medicine. His overhead illustrations were detailed. He answered questions from an audience that was obviously very interested in the topic saying that one in thirteen men suffered a risk of prostate problems in their lifetime. He described the current popular diagnostic tests DRE, TRUS and PSA
Past President Terry Finn handed over a donation of $8000.00 in support of the research work at the regional Cancer Centre.

The District Governor's annual visit was rescheduled as a Dinner Meeting at 6 o'clock at the Caboto Club.

DG Roberto Sanchez is a resident of Grosse Ile, Michigan and a member of the Grosse Ile Rotary Club since 1984. He was a Group Study Exchange Team Leader to Chile in 1998.
Our Governor for this year brought us a straight forward message about Rotary and its' impact on the lives of people throughout the world. Roberto defined a club as successful when members really feel good about being a Rotarian. He challenged us to live active rotary lives through a set of goals.

No Rotary Meeting
Labour Day Holiday
Labour Day today is more of an American holiday than a Canadian one although the Canadian labour movement can justly claim the title of originator of the idea of a Labour Day Holiday. Its motivation, however, is rooted in the turmoil of the early American Labour movement

Labour Day is one of eight annual Canadian holidays when retailers were at one time forced to close their doors and offer no goods or services for sale. It has been celebrated in Canada since 1872. At that time the celebration took place in May.
In 1894, the federal parliament, recognizing that Canadians needed a long weekend at the end of the summer and before the onset of the cold weather, moved Labour Day to the first Monday in September. Canada and the United States are among the few countries to celebrate at that time, according to experts at the Toronto Reference Library.

The Environmental Performance Foundation of Canada
Alternative Fuel Vehicle Strategies

Rawle gave information as to the present day Green House Gas effect on the environment.
He then outlined a course of action that will prevent further damage to the environment.
He demonstrated the use of battery driven vehicles by having a battery operated scooter driven around the meeting room.

Discusses the requirements of the Alternative Fuels Act and Alternative Fuel Regulations

EPF will join and participate with many diverse community groups, and corporations that are committed to protecting public health and the natural environment. Our goal for this year will be to encourage and promote community environmental choices by celebrating with tree planting, workshops, and conferences.

The Canada Post Literacy Awards, ..... honour individuals, organizations and businesses doing commendable work to improve reading and writing skills in Canada. They recognize grassroots literacy initiatives and pay tribute to learners and to the people who have helped them learn to read and write.

Civic Holiday (Simcoe Day) - No Meeting
The first Monday in August is a holiday in Canada except in Québec, Newfoundland and the Yukon. Every other province and territory has their own name for it, depending on heritage and the political will at the time the holiday was created.
Canadian ceremonies and holidays such as Boxing Day and the August Civic Holiday (a "bank holiday") are derived from our British roots.
This national holiday is similar to Heritage Day. It gives everyone a break from work.
The Canadian Civic Holiday here in Ontario is observed on the first Monday in August each year.

Rotarian Janet Kelly told us about her
"Adventures in Spain"

Janet joined our club in 1990.
She is currently the Director of Windsor's Children's Achievement Centre and a very active Rotarian. Janet has been involved for some time with our Youth Exchange program.

Janet travelled as a member of a "Dream Team" selected from English speaking people from around the world. The team was to spend 10 days with Spanish speaking people who wanted to learn conversational English. She flew to Madrid where she did a makeup meeting at a local Rotary Club. She then visited El Pardo, the home of Francisco Franco. The team then travelled to Valdellavilla, a tiny 5 acre sheep grazing hamlet. Each day members of the group were paired with a Spanish student for an hour.

"The Future of our Health System"

Don told the audience that publicly funded health care not only serves as a benefit to all citizens but it also makes good business sense by making us more competitive. He said that Canada and the province need long-term stability in our health care system". He went on to explain how the universality and reasonable cost of our health care system compared to the system in the United States gives us a major advantage.

This is Your Life

This program was unique in that it combined several aspects of our Rotary life:

two of our inbound Exchange Students nearing the end of their year talked about their Canadian experience;
one of our new members presented the traditional "This is Your Life" talk;
Walter Willms talked about his recommendations to the Board concerning the Rotary (1918) Office.

Scott Elliott's Inaugural Address

Scott joined our Club in 1991. His profession is banking.
He has been a very active Rotarian serving as a committee Chairman and member on our Board.

In a sense, Scott will be leading us into a new era for our Club.

For more than three quarters of a century our mandate has centered around fundraising activities in support of disabled children in conjunction with the Easter Seal Organization (ESO). That organization has now elected to assume local responsibility for its' fundraising activities.

The ESO decision will necessitate a downsizing of our Office complement to one full time person. It will also mean that individual committees will be required to assume more responsibility for their own activities.

In the short term, our Board has decided that fundraising prority will be directed at meeting the shortfall remaining in the budget in support of the construction of the Children's Safety Village.

Scott's mandate for the 2003-2004 term will be to:

Increase membership from 155 to 175.
Improve retention of existing members.
Enhance the "Fun and Fellowship" program.
Encourage the "Bragbucks" to continue on.
Promote more meetings and events with families.
Raise more money for CSV with self-financial initiatives and a capital program.
