    Civic Holiday - No Meeting

    The first Monday in August is a holiday in Canada except in Québec, Newfoundland and the Yukon. Every other province and territory has their own name for it, depending on heritage and the political will at the time the holiday was created.
    The Canadian Civic Holiday here in Ontario is observed on the first Monday in August each year.

    David Eady

    This is Your Life Program

    We were given a chance to learn a little about the life of new member David Eady. David read to us from a book that he is writing on his life. He first talked about his experiences while growing up in various parts of Northern Ontario. He then went on to describe his life at University and his worklife experiences. David is a lifelong librarian. He is obviously well read and has travelled extensively. He also has a number of hobbies including stamp collecting, bird watching, investment tracking, architectural studies and cooking. Steve Salmons, CEO, Windsor Public Library

    Steve Salmons was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Windsor Public Library on September 10, 1997. Mr. Salmons joined the Library in 1990. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Salmons served the Windsor Public Library as Acting Chief Executive Officer, Director of Support Services, and Human Resources Manager.

    Mr. Salmons brought his expertise from previous positions as the Human Resource Specialist at Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals in Hamilton, Ontario, and Manager, Branch Services and Operations, for the Royal Bank of Canada.

    Great things are happening in our libraries. Click on some of the references below to see some of these developments. If you have not been to your local library lately, you are missing a pleasant and enriching experience. The new virtual library reaches out to anyone who has access to the Internet. Steve updated us on new happenings in the Windsor Library System. He asked all members to visit their local library whether in person or over the Internet to see first hand what progress has been made using the latest in technology. He dwelled on the importance of reading skills for every citizen in today's world. He spent some time talking about their efforts to combat illiteracy in the Windsor area.

    Stan McDowall - Trainer, Volunteers for Literacy

    Illiteracy is the lack of listening, speaking, reading, writing and mathematics skills necessary to solve problems one encounters in daily life; to take advantage of opportunities in one's environment; and to participate fully in the transformation of one's society.

    Windsor Volunteers for Literacy supports adults who want to improve their reading, writing and numerical skills. (Grade 0-5/6).
    Over 25% of our local population are deemed as functionally illiterate (struggle to understand simple printed material--or can't read it at all).
    Windsor Volunteers for Literacy provides free, one-on-one tutoring. Tutoring is confidential and student-centred: held at branches convenient to both tutor and student.
    Windsor Volunteers for Literacy is a community based program using volunteers as tutors. Through training and support, we help build the skills and abilities so volunteers gain satisfaction and fulfillment in teaching an adult to read.

    Windsor Volunteers for Literacy was formed in September 1980. It was the result of a task force done by the Windsor Public Library showing a great need for this program. In Windsor there are 30,000 people whose reading skills are too limited to deal with most written material that is part of everyday life. Simple things that readers take for granted such as reading a prescription or filling out an application for employment.

    Canada Day Parade in Downtown Windsor - click on picture to enlarge it

  • Monday, July 2, 2000 Meeting cancelled in honour of the
    Canada Day Holiday

    Canada's national celebration is always observed on July 1, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case it is observed the following day.

    The name "Canada" originated from a mistaken hearing, by early explorers, of the Huron-Iroquois native word "Kanata" which means "village" or "settlement".

    The British North America Act, 1867 united the Provinces of Canada (Quebec and Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick into the "Dominion of Canada".
    Manitoba was admitted as a province in 1870;
    British Columbia, in 1871;
    Prince Edward Island, in 1873;
    all remaining provinces and territories except Newfoundland in 1880;
    Newfoundland was admitted as a province in 1949.

    On April 17, 1982, Queen Elizabeth II visited Canada and, in a ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, signed the CONSTITUTION ACT of 1982, which gave Canada complete independence.
