Prior to becoming the President-elect, he served as a Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, and served as Chairman of the Fund Development Committee and as Liaison to RI's Leadership Development Committee and the 2005 Centennial Planning Committee.
These remarks are extracted from his acceptance speech at the 2000 Rotary International Convention:
Rotary is of great value. It changes the course of human life. It changes the lives of every Rotary beneficiary, as well as the lives of each Rotarian. It is worthy of our time, effort, energy, means, and commitment; and it brings people together. It is a great privilege to be a member of the world's oldest and most distinguished service club.
Mr. King's presentation was well received by the Rotary audience. It's message focused on our obligation as Rotarians to help the club grow in membership with candidates who meet our demanding criteria. He presented a list of 20 reasons why a person might want to be a Rotarian.
