The following brief descriptions of 1998 meetings and events are intended as a record for members of club activities. Where appropriate, links to support pages or links to sites related to the topic have been included.



Meeting and Event Descriptions
1998

One hundred and eighteen children plus parents and friends were fed and entertained by Rotarians and a number of other friends of Rotary. Santa arrived with presents to cap the afternoon's festivities at the Caboto Club.

  • Dr. Mary Louise Drake November 16th - Dr Mary Louise Drake spoke to the club about "Building Blocks For Better Babies", a program funded by Health Canada designed to reduce the number of low birth weight babies.
    The university of Windsor's School of Nursing is a sponsoring agency of the Windsor Essex Prenatal Nutrition Committee that offers the program locally.

    2) The Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program is a comprehensive Program designed to provide food supplementation, nutrition counselling, support, education, referral and counselling on lifestyle issues to pregnant women who are most likely to have unhealthy babies.

  • November 13th, 14th and 15th - Our fifth Winter Art-in-the-Park was held at the Fogolar Furlan Club.
    This Winter showing has been held in the Fogolar Furlan Club buildings since its inception in 1993. It has become a popular outlet for exhibition of the works of the region's artists. The format is similar to the summer show with the exception that this is an indoor display. Decorations enhanced the winter theme and spirit.

  • November 9th - Robert Skipper shared his rememberences of his years in the European theatre during WW2 during our Rememberance Day ceremonies.

  • November 2nd - This is Your Life - Margaret Ann Prince brought us Rotarians Ed Boycott, John Kousik and Ann Price

  • October 26th - Dream Team Brainstorm - Paul Cassano directed an idea generating exercise involving all Rotarian meeting guests.

  • October 19th
    Carole MacNeil of CBC Newsworld was our guest. She spoke about the "political reality" of reporting the news and the necessity for divorcing "self" from news delivery.

  • October 12th
    Canadian Thanksgiving - Regular meeting cancelled

  • October 5th
    brought a visit from our District Governor, Ed Schulz

  • September 28th
    John Toews, President of Personal Planning/Capital Management Windsor, spoke to the club about "Real Financial Planning".

  • Sept 21
    John Omstead, President of Family Tradition Foods Inc., spoke to the club on the challenges in taking over a well established production facility. He talked about instilling Family Tradition’s core values of Respect, Integrity, Responsiveness, Innovation and Synergy into the organization and positioning of the company for growth.

  • September 19th and 20th
    Children's Fest 98 was greeted by perfect weather.
    This was the 5th year for this event. Activities of special interest to children were held in tents spread throughout the Foglar Furlan Club grounds. Profits from this event are directed to The Windsor Childrens Rehabilitation Center. About 15,000 people passed through the gates over the weekend generating a gross revenue of about $85,000.00

  • Sept 14
    Sandra Kodis spoke about the Year 2000 computer problem. Her focus was on an explanation of the Y2K problem and it's effect on Commerce, Manufacturing and Business as well as management approaches to identification and resolutions to the adherent problems. Sandra spoke later in the evening in more detail on the same topic to a joint meeting of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Chapter 55 and the Canadian Information Processing Society (Windsor Chapter).

  • August 31
    Adelina Cecchin, a member of the Group Study Exchange Team who travelled to Japan last spring, provided a slide demonstration of her experience. Adelina discussed much of the culture and day to day activities of the Japanese. She entertained a number of questions and, in particular, that Ontario may be more advanced from an education standpoint than in Japan.   • August 24
    Ms. Laura Liebrock, Gerontology Education Specialist, from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), spoke to us about caregiver stress and caring for youself as a caregiver. Dementia and Alzheimers are on the increase as the population ages through the baby boom effect and longer living trends so many more of us will find ourselves caring for parents and mates with these diseases.

  • August 23
    Willistead Classic & Antique Car Show - Willistead Park, 1899 Niagara St.
    Many of our club members participate in this show each year.
    To give you an idea of what spectators saw, look at some samples from recent California shows.

  • August 19th to 23rd
    Busker Festival at Dieppe Park featured Jugglers, Fire-eaters, Musicians, Street Actors. Troups of free wheeling bizzare Street performers with their own sets of values and magical silliness entertained for voluntary donations. Rotarians operated the "beer Tent" and maintained a watching brief in preparation for further involvement in future Busker presentations.

  • August 22
    Saturday August 22, 6:30pm, under the Market Tent $20 bought you a ticket for the Market Fest98, held under the Market Tent at the Market Square, Ottawa Street and Walker Road - Steak or Lobster Dinner & Barbeque - Live Music by Celtic Cross - Door Prizes
    A joint fund raising effort with the Rotary Club of Harrow
    in support of our Ghana Projects raised over $10,000.00.

  • August 17
    Mr. John Mann, Director of Engineering for Chrysler, Canada and General Manager of the new University of Windsor/Chrysler Research Facility, gave our members a peek inside their new high security research facility.

  • August 10
    Rotarian Norm Wheeler and his committee members, hosted a meeting featuring the Riverfront Tree Program, a joint project of our Rotary Club and the City of Windsor Department of Parks and Recreation.
    A slide show demonstrated to members an architect's rendering of plans for a special area in Riverside Park set aside to honour the many contributors to the program.

  • July 27th
    Former Windsor Rotarian David Butler, now President of the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation, spoke about provincial efforts to encourage the professional development of workers in the Ontario tourism industry.

  • July 20th
    Members were treated to another edition of the popular "This is Your Life" program. Featured speakers were Terry Finn, Chuck Thompson and Jackie Stchyrba-Leigh.

  • July 13th
    Durhane Wong-Reiger, President of the Canadian Hemophilia Society and a Board member of the new Canadian Blood Services, spoke to us on the topic of "Restoring Confidence in Canada's Blood System: The Legacy of HIV and Hepatitis C and the impact of the Krever Inquiry.

  • July 11th
    The Easter Seal 24 Hour Relay was held on July 11th & 12th. Organizers report that in excess of $58,000.00 was raised for our Easter Seal program through the efforts of 35 team 20-member teams. Congratulations to Crescent Electronics and their captain, Jackie Stchyrba-Leigh for winning this year's event.

  • July 6th
    Walter Willms gave his final Swan Song as President of our Club. Steve Payne was presented with the Chain of Office for the 1998-99 term.

  • June 29th
    The Honorable Herb Gray, MP for Windsor West, spoke to our members about The Canada Millennium Partnership Program. He invited our club to participate in the development of projects designed to explore our heritage, celebrate our achievements or build our future in honor of Canada's accomplishments as we enter the year 2000. He said that the Federal Government was prepared to fund up to one third of the cost of approved millennium projects.

  • June 22nd
    Bob Gallagher brought us an inspiring program about our work in Ghana.

  • June 15th
    Jane Boyd spoke to us about "Cancer Care Ontario"
    This is the site for the Windsor Regional cancer Centre

    Power Surfers, a joint project of The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, The Windsor Public Library and Hotel Dieu-Grace Hospital, have created "Patients Online for Well-being, Education & Research". This site is a Directory of cancer-related Web sites.

  • June 8th
    Dr. Ross Paul, President of the University of Windsor, presented a
    "Vision for the University of Windsor"


  • June 6th
    This weekend brought us another very successful Summer Art in the Park. .
