Windsor (1918) Rotarian Kay Curtis has mounted a series of projects designed to raise money for a school in Nyeri, Kenya.
KENYAN SCHOOL PROJECT
Kenya is a republic country in East Africa. Until 2007 when
there were disputes regarding the presidential election, Kenya
experienced relative stability in comparison to some other
African countries. The population of Kenya is 37,953,840.
The per capita income in Kenya is $1200.
The school is located in Nyeri, a farming community
approximately 180 kilometers north of Nairobi. Nyeri is not
one of the larger cities in Kenya. The population is 213,000.
Farming focuses mainly on tea and coffee.
Muruguru primary school which was chosen for this project is
an elementary school with approximately 600 students ranging
from kindergarten to Grade 8. The school requires significant
improvements to ensure hygiene and cleanliness in addition to
a number of supplies that will enhance learning.
Kay Curtis, Project Coordinator from the World Community
Service Committee along with the Rotary Club of Windsor
1918 and a Rotary Club of Nyeri in Kenya will oversee the
project. The Coordinator makes sure that all money raised for
this project goes through the Rotary Club; a budget is planned,
implemented and monitored by the Rotary Club of Windsor
1918. The project coordinator visited Nyeri in February of
2007 to assess the community’s needs.

Dollar for Literacy Project in Kenya
Kay's letter (shown below) on why she was motivated to start this project explains why there is a substantial need for support for educational projects in Kenya.
Dear Friends:
In 2002, when my husband, Christopher Paul Curtis, won the Newbery Award for his book Bud Not Buddy, he was invited to go to Kenya Africa with Kemie Nix to promote literacy to the children of Kenya.
It was the most fulfilling experience the Curtis family ever underwent. The children had no school supplies, no books in their library, dirt floors in the class room, dilapidated school conditions, no running water or clean water for drinking, and a hole dug in the ground for a toilet.
Last February I went to Kenya. I visited many schools, all needing help. I picked a school for my Rotary project which will provide: Clean water, Latrines, Library, Text Books, Uniforms, Kitchen, and a feeding program for 600 children.
I have to raise money for the project, so I came up with the idea that if everyone that Christopher ever talked to donated one dollar we would be able to help the Children of Nyeri, Kenya have a better future.
So I am asking for your help, One dollar goes a long way and we can all make a GIVING Difference. If every child in your school donates a dollar a week for one month, we can all make a difference for the children of Nyeri, Kenya, because a LITTLE GIVE can make a BIG DIFFERENCE.
In December 2008 our family will be going to Kenya to oversee the project and to make sure that all of our goals are accomplished. If you would like to join us or have any questions at all please contact us at
kaycurtis@cogeco.ca.

School Project 2008
The Kenyan School Project is one of the World Community Service Committee (WCSC) Projects of the Rotary club of Windsor 1918. The project will provide 600 primary school age children in Nyeri, Kenya with clean drinking water, flush toilets, and a kitchen that will provide food for the children while at school. The project will also supply textbooks and school uniforms; it will renovate an existing library, and renovate junior and senior kindergarten classrooms.
The program will focus on improving educational opportunities, providing increased self-esteem and self worth. Improved literacy will be the goal with the aim of promoting life-long communication skills, friendship, and a better understanding of cultural differences and promote world peace.
