Hart Walker Project Activities
The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)
spearheaded a community initiative to build Hart Walkers,
an assistive device which will permit some children with
Physical disabilities to be mobile. By donating $85,000.00 to begin the
research for this device, the Rotary Club of Windsor became a part of the
Provincial Governing Body. Following this investment, Rotarians in our club
have established a partnership with community metal cutters to organize the
Windsor Hart Walker Project. The project involves the building and assembly
of Hart Walkers by over 100 local companies and Rotary volunteers. As well,
fund raising activities provide financial support for associated orthotic
costs. Physically disabled children are a focus of our club. Windsor Rotary
is proud to be part of a project which may have such a profound significance
on these children. The extent of our involvement attests to the importance
of this project to our club.
We are retrofitting and recycling the Hart Walkers as children outgrow them.
In the spring of 2002 we sent three Hart Walkers to children in the United States, one to New York for a 4 year old girl, and the other two to Washington to 5 year old twin boys with Cerebral Palsy
We arranged for an 8 year old girl in Kentucky, who has brain injuries - her condition is similar to Cerebral Palsy, to be fitted to a Hart Walker.
We are also going to be provided a Walker to a little girl in London, whose family heard about the Hart Walker through the Mayor's luncheon.
In June, 2004, Rotarian Joe Greco, travelled to Venezuela to accompany the delivery of 6 Windsor-made Hart Walkers to the Rotary Club of Lechekia in Venezuela. These Walkers were part of a large medical shipment of new and used equipment assembled through the work of a number of co-operating groups.
Representatives from the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) and friends are shown donating 6 Windsor-made Hart Walkers to a representative of the Rotary Club of Lechekia in Venezuela.
In the photo are Joe Greco, Dianne Moore, Chair of the Hart Walker Committee, Alfeo Zonta, one of the Hart Walker volunteers, Antonio Meo of Venezuela, whose 7 year old daughter will receive one of the walkers, and the owner of the Dominion Golf Club, who provided funding for the project.
The Hart Walkers are returned as the child outgrows the walker and are retrofitted by our volunteers to be made ready for the next child who needs them. This is an ongoing project and will be ongoing as long as the 150 Walkers that were manufactured by local manufacturing firms last.
The parents of many of the children learned about the Hart Walker project through this Web Site.
We would like to acknowledge Wolverine Freight who willingly deliver the Walkers to children at no cost, and also Farrow Customs Brokers who assist with border clearance.
