$36,000.00 donation
to the Children's Safety Village

On May 7, 2007, The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) donated
$36,000 to the Children’s Safety Village.
This gift allowed the CSV to pay off the outstanding amount on their original building loan. This was accomplished through the Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund, from which the club obtains funds for projects judged deserving by the club and Rotary Foundation Board.
This gift allowed the CSV building to be completely debt-free.
The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)’s
total contribution to the CSV
is now almost $500,000.00.
The CSV was built in 2002 after many years of planning and work by members of The Rotary Club Of Windsor (1918), sister Rotary clubs, and other dedicated members of the community. It is run by the Children’s Safety Village board as an independent entity.
The mission of the Children's Safety Village is to nurture safety and to eliminate preventable injuries and fatalities through education during a child’s formative years in a creative, fun-filled and interactive environment
Visit the official Children’s Safety Village web site. It has all of the information pertaining to the village’s construction-- how it runs, how you can contribute to this cause of safety, and much more.
The site is continuously updated as projects occur.

The Children's Safety Village of Windsor and Essex County is a place where children in Kindergarten to Grade 5 learn about
traffic and fire safety as well as other types of safe living (bike safety, safe net surfing, talking to strangers) in a classroom setting
followed by navigating through a child-size village which contains buildings, railway crossings, traffic signals and roads using
small battery powered jeeps. Representatives from Windsor Police Services and Fire and Rescue will supervise the
proceedings.
They learn the rules of fire safety taught by experts in a realistic setting within the large town hall.

Another Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) Project
The Children’s Safety Village is a kid sized version of our city streets and buildings built to provide a more life-like setting for small children.
The children will learn safe roadway skills by driving small electric cars through real conditions and experience traffic safety by walking the miniature streets and sidewalks. Along the way they will visit and learn safety information through a Utility Sub-Station,
intersections and railway crossings, all while having fun.
The village is comprised of an outer road circuit with a cross of connecting roads through the middle. Small block buildings are sponsored by local companies and businesses. These form the desired townscape theme.
There is a Townhall Classroom Building designed for instructional purposes. It includes a replica of a home situation in which fire safety is learned. This area also serves as a setting in which personnel from the Windsor Fire and Rescue Services and Windsor Police Services provide basic information before children experience the hands-on facilities. The Fire and Rescue Services as well as Police Services remain stationary in lieu of travelling to various schools as they have in the past. Children are bused in from area schools according to prearranged schedules.
Derwent Park (behind Place Concorde) is the Safety Village location.
This building provides administrative areas for personnel working in the village as well as serving as the new location of The Office of Windsor Rotary (1918).
Rotary rents the office space from the CSV organization.
In addition, there is a Rotary Resource Centre and a boardroom which is available to all Rotary clubs in Windsor and Essex County.
Windsor Fire and Rescue works jointly with the Windsor Police Services to provide instructional services to the village under the guidance of a Children’s Safety Village Board of Directors.
Essex County Police & Fire Services have also participated in the instruction.
The independent CSV Board organizes fundraising events, seeks out sources of financial support and oversees the development and operation of the facility . The Board membership includes representatives of Rotary, Police Services, Fire Services, school districts, Parks and Recreation and corporate and community sponsors including Place Concorde.
The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) accepted a mandate to continue to assist the CSV project through to its full physical completion and financial independence .

The site for the The village is on 2.6 acres of land south of the Place Concorde in Derwent Park at Forest Glade Drive and the Lauzon Parkway.
A lease totaling 50 years was approved by City Council on April 13th, 1999.
Detailed plans of the project are available for viewing in the Children's Safety Village office and information about sponsorship is available from CSV staff.
If you would like a visit from CSV representatives to further explain our project, please contact the CSV office at 945-5500.
Construction for the centre continues, funded by a loan from the Windsor Rotary Club (1918) Foundation Fund.

CSV Halloween Event
On a sunny, warm and windy Saturday afternoon, a host of goblins, devils, vampires and pixies invaded the Children's Safety Village for a tour of the grounds where adult sprites had set up tents from which they handed out goodies. Inside the main building, craft rooms, displays and stage shows were available. The volunteers were representatives from the organizations who have sponsored the village, village staff and high school students who were satisfying the volunteer requirement in their curriculum.

Christmas Visit at The Safety Village
Santa and Mrs. Claus visited Rotary’s Children’s Safety Village on Thursday, December 18th from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM..
Kids and grandkids were invited to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and meet Elmer, Sparky and Siren, the Safety, Fire and EMS mascots. They rode the jeeps and took part in a fingerprinting clinic.
Proceeds from this fundraiser were given to the Rotary Safety Village in support of programs designed to nurture safety and eliminate preventable injuries and fatalities, through education in the formative years.
On Monday, September 13, 1999, Representatives from the Police and Fire departments and our own Steve Payne and Joe Passa spoke and showed overheads to Rotarians about the planned $2.5 million Village. Members were also shown a model of the village and pictures of
committee visits to other cities with existing safety villages.
It was announced that Space for Rotary offices would also be provided for in the Derwent buildings.
Buses from local schools began arriving daily early in 2004 as the centre began preliminary operations. A community open house was scheduled for June 19th.
A powerpoint presentation on the planning process showing the architectural drawings and visits to other sites is available for
viewing upon request to the CSV Office.

Fire Safety Tips
Christmas Trees
Be sure your tree has a constant supply of water--check the level daily.
Party Safety
Use flame-retardant or non-combustible materials for costumes and decorations.
Empty ashtrays often--wet their contents before dumping them.
Supervise children and keep them away from matches, lighters, and candles.
Heating Hazards
Keep all space heaters and portable heaters at least 3 feet (1meter) away from anything that can burn--newspapers, furniture, even
walls.
Fireplaces.
Keep fireplace fires small, and use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room.
Children's Opportunity Grants are available through the Rotary Foundation to support new projects benefiting children.
